He recently played for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round, 60th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. His younger brother Kevin Hayes currently plays in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers.
