Jerry Appicella Biography
Jerry Appicella, 51, was attacked in Denaby Main, South Yorkshire as he was returning home from a local store on December 3.
Police found him dead in his home on December 15, 2019, nearly two weeks after the brutal assault.
Shae Nicholson, 20, was convicted of murder, while Martell Fabian Brown, 24, and a 15-year-old boy who cannot be identified were found guilty of manslaughter in Sheffield Crown Court.
During the trial, the court heard that the motive for the attack was simply ‘because they wanted to’, but that several other factors, such as Mr. Appicella’s sexuality, his appearance or his dependence on alcohol, possibly played a role.

Jerry Appicella had separated from society

The court heard that Appicella had separated from society due to his addiction and visited the Go Local store to purchase alcohol.
He was attacked by Nicholson, Fabian Brown and the boy, who was only 14 at the time.
The trio brutally beat Mr. Appicella before a passing woman took him home and ran to help him.
After arriving home, Mr. Appicella closed the door behind him.
It is believed that he died from his injuries only hours later, although his body remained undiscovered for two weeks.

When they finished, Mr. Appicella was helped home by a lady who witnessed the attack.
‘He died at her home address from the trauma suffered in that attack. His body was not discovered until about 12 days later.
‘Why did these young men attack and kill him? It is not easy to say. Maybe because he was gay, or a ‘f **** t’ or a ‘nonce’ as they referred to him.
‘The exact reason may or may not be clear. All that can be said for sure is that they carried out their attack because they wanted to.
Causes of the death

Apicella was hit with a brick and metal post in the alley (above) on December 3. Officers believe he later walked to his home and then died.
Harrison said Appicella changed his name when he was young and went on to study at drama school before becoming addicted to alcohol.
By 2019 he was living an ‘isolated’ life in his bungalow, but he still had the support of family and friends.
They became concerned when they hadn’t heard from him since he spoke to his mother in the United States on December 3.
By December 15, police officers were so concerned that they entered his home, only to find him dead in his bed.
His face was covered in dried blood and it had become apparent that he had been attacked. It was later revealed that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage and went into a coma.
A post-mortem examination found that the cause of death was severe head trauma, suffered during the attack.
Mr. Harrison said that, in summary, Mr. Appicella had been kicked and punched to death.
Mr Harrison said: ‘CCTV shows Mr Appicella going to the store and coming into conflict with some of the defendants in the store and just outside.
They all attack him together while he is walking down an alley. It depicts a brutal attack by children and young adults on an obviously vulnerable and defenseless victim. There is no obvious motive for the attack.
“It is a sad and disappointing characteristic that very few witnesses have been willing to come forward and help the police.”
