At least 3,000 ‘criminal pedophiles’ have been operating in the Roman Catholic Church in postwar France, according to a devastating new report.
The ‘rather frightening’ figures will be revealed in detail in a study by the Independent Commission on S*xual Abuse in the Church.
Jean-Marc Sauvé, the commission’s chairman, said there have been “between 2,900 and 3,200 criminal pedophiles” in the French church since 1950.
“This is a minimal estimate,” he told the French news agency AFP, and his victims number many thousands more according to the exposure.
Commenting on his 2,500-page report, which will be released in full on Tuesday, Sauvé said: “It is an important step, but not the end of the story, not for the Catholic Church or for the rest of society.
‘At the end of this considerable work, one cannot claim to have the whole truth. We are alone on the threshold. Other work will have to deepen the knowledge about child delinquency. But we have enough proven facts to speak with confidence and legitimacy. ”

The independent commission was established in 2018 by the French Episcopal Conference in response to numerous abuse scandals in a country where Catholicism remains the majority religion.
It also follows Pope Francis who passed a landmark measure that forces those who know about s*xual abuse in the Church to report it to their superiors.
The Commission was made up of 22 lawyers, doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians.
When he began his work, he requested witness statements and established a hotline, which reported receiving thousands of messages in the following months.
The report ‘will have the effect of a bomb,’ said Olivier Savignac of the victims’ association Talk and Revive (Parler et Revivre)
Bishop Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, chairman of the Commission, said he feared the report would reveal “significant and frightening figures.”
