“We were breaking the ice, keeping the waterways open for trade on the St. Marys River,” McCarron told the news station. “As we were arriving, we saw a dog approaching us on the ice. We saw the dog fall back into the water, then climb up and run back to the island. We go out and take it upon ourselves to go out and create a search party for the dog. ”

McCarron added: “We went back and left him some food in hopes that maybe he would come to us and unfortunately he didn’t.” Later that night, the cutter went around the island and McCarron said: “We saw the dog sitting by the dock and we were very excited because we all thought the worst. He was very malnourished, his ribs and hip bones were sticking out, but the best news was that he had a necklace with good contact information, so we were able to call his owners. ”
