Jaylan killed his own brother
Officers responded to his home early Wednesday to receive a report of a stabbing and found the victim, who has not been publicly identified, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. A subsequent investigation revealed that the domestic dispute turned into a “deadly showdown” between the two brothers, police said.
Jones later admitted during an interview with detectives that he got into a fight with his brother upstairs, prompting someone else inside the house to break up the fight. But the couple soon began fighting again, police said.
“Once separated for the last time, the victim came downstairs as suspect Jaylan informed her that he went to his room, retrieved his gun, got out and shot the victim multiple times,” police said in a statement Wednesday .
Jones then tried to dispose of the weapon that he allegedly used to kill his brother after the fatal fight. He has been charged with malicious murder and tampering with evidence, police said. Video released by police shows Jones without a mask being detained less than 24 hours after the shooting.
A woman who claimed to be related to the Jones family said she was saddened and “incredulous” at the murder.
“Two brothers arguing over body washing,” Tiffany Purnell wrote on Facebook Thursday. “One ends up dead and the other in prison for the rest of his life. I know it’s deeper than body wash. But something as small as that triggered it causing all this pain and pain. Now his mother and his family are suffering and trying to make sense of everything … They were the only two children of his. ”
Authorities declined to release the victim’s name Thursday because the murder is a domestic violence incident, police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jones was being held without bond Friday at the Clayton County Jail, records show. It is unclear if he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
