A fan admitted to attacking Father Jamie McMorrin
Father McMorrin was kneeling for morning prayers when the bully approached and attacked him.
He struck the cleric on the back and shoulder before chasing him through the cathedral.
Father McMorrin, 35, who tried in vain to reason with the bully, used a wooden chair to defend himself until Irvine dropped his makeshift weapon and made a runner.
The capital’s sheriff’s court heard that Irvine assaulted a 16-year-old girl in nearby East Princes Street Gardens 20 minutes later.
He then he fled south, to Cumbria, where he is from.
Prosecutor Alan Wickham said
Prosecutor Alan Wickham said the offender had a “hand-rolled cigarette and was drinking from a purple can” when “he came up and asked if he was a priest.”
Father McMorrin, who had been kneeling on the front bench, revealed that he did, believing that Irvine wanted to speak to him.
But he saw the brute pull a bottle out of his pocket as he headed down the hall, before running up to him and swinging it.
Mr. Wickham said: “Father McMorrin avoided this attempted hit, but then felt a blow to his shoulder and lower back.
He stood up and tried to calm the accused, trying to reason with him.
He also admitted to grabbing his teenage victim and putting her in a headlock.
Defense attorney Mark Hutchison said Irvine, nicknamed Saughton in Edinburgh, accepted that the jail was “appropriate.”
Sheriff Thomas Welsh postponed sentencing until next month.
Father McMorrin and the Archdiocese of Edinburgh did not comment.
