Cummings, then 27, was jailed for life with a minimum period of 24 years in November 2008 after he pleaded guilty to murder. He also raped his victim.

Linda Marshall, a family friend and local Labor councilor, said: “Poor Jamie couldn’t get over what he witnessed. When you met him and talked to him, he was always a lovely boy.

“ He was polite and had a twinkle in his eye. He was just the light in the room when he walked in, a lovely boy. People loved him. ‘

Cllr Marshall said: ‘Obviously everyone is shocked, they just didn’t see him coming, he really is heartbreaking.

“The waste around here has been tremendous. I walked through town this morning and the amount of people talking about him is incredible. ”
