Charges – Arrested

James Halsell Jr., 64, a former NASA space shuttle commander, had been charged with reckless murder charges in the Alabama crash that killed 11-year-old Niomi Deona James and 13-year-old Jayla Latrick Parler.

He pleaded guilty to him on multiple reduced counts of manslaughter and assault Thursday in Tuscaloosa. Under the agreement, Halsell will serve four years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. He was facing 60 years behind bars for hitting the vehicle carrying the two victims from behind, while allegedly driving under the influence at high speed.

The family of the victims were not satisfied with the lighter sentence. It wasn’t justice, ”said Latrice Parler, the girls’ mother, adding that she didn’t think Halsell’s apology was sincere. “My daughters were amazing, beautiful, smart and strong little girls who could have been anything in this world if they had the chance to grow up, but that was taken from me and everyone else in this world,” Parler said.

The girl’s father, who was injured in the accident, said the wheels of justice rolled too slowly in the case, which was delayed for a myriad of reasons, including the pandemic. District Attorney Hays Webb also said he was dissatisfied with the lighter plea deal.

“It serves as a reminder that there is a fine line. You have someone who has been to space five times and, due to a poor decision on his part, ended up killing two girls, “Webb said after the court was thrown out.

Halsell left NASA in 2006 to work in the aerospace industry. Webb said his celebrity status had “no influence in any way” on the proceedings.
