The probable cause affidavit says a missing child was “subsequently located at James Chadwell’s residence on Park Avenue in Lafayette, Indiana.”
On April 19, 2021, agents were dispatched regarding a missing child report near Park Avenue in Lafayette, Indiana. Officers took a report that a girl of about 10 years old had left her residence around 6:30 p.m. and she couldn’t be found. As officers searched the neighborhood, they contacted James Chadwell, who told officers that the girl had been at her residence before her but she had left.
After failing to locate the boy, officers returned to Chadwell’s residence and asked permission to verify her residence.
He allowed them in and the officers searched the basement, which was secured with a chain lock. In the basement, an officer “found a young woman who was visibly distraught and crying, with her clothes on the floor next to her.” She was identified as the girl and said Chadwell tried to kill her.
She was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
The girl described going to Chadwell’s residence and petting her dogs. While she was inside the house, Chadwell attacked her, she said.
He attempted to have sex with her and then forced her to perform oral sex on him, the affidavit alleges. At one point, Chadwell got dressed to go open the door and then police found her, he says. Along his neck were side strangulation marks.
