James Blassingame is one of two Capitol cops who fought the pro-Trumpers who stormed the Capitol on January 6 and sued former President Donald Trump. Blassingame is reportedly a 17-year veteran of the force. Hemby has been in the force for 11 years. His lawsuit claimed that Blassingame was branded a racial slur throughout the assault, saying, “He lost count of the many times the racial slur was thrown at him.”
Capitol Police Sues Trump
Earlier this year, Gus Papathanasiou, head of the Capitol Police Officers Union, said that some 140 officers were injured during the insurrection. “I have officers who were not issued helmets before the attack who have suffered head injuries,” Papathanasiou said.
“One officer has two broken ribs and two broken spinal discs and another was stabbed with a metal stake, to name a few of the injuries.”

According to the lawsuit, both United States Capitol police officers reported to their duties on January 6, 2021, “without any suspicion that they would soon become the target of Trump supporters.”
Both have alleged that Trump was directly responsible for inciting a crowd of his supporters who had gathered at his “Stop the Steal” rally outside the White House that morning. Hemby was allegedly “smashed against the doors” of the Capitol, allegedly “doused with chemicals” and bleeding from his face, according to the lawsuit. Blassingame, on the other hand, has claimed that he was struck against a stone column and injured his head and back.
Each of the officers is seeking at least $ 75,000 in damages.
James Blassingame and Sydney Hemby lawsuit
“The insurrectionary mob, which Trump had inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed, aided and abetted, broke through the plaintiffs and their fellow officers, persecuting and attacking them in and out of the United States Capitol, and causing He complained about the injuries here, ”the lawsuit said.
The Blassingame and Hemby lawsuit also described the terror officers experienced inside the Capitol: The pro-Trump mob vastly outnumbered law enforcement. The lawsuit says that Blassingame has suffered from depression since then and that “severe emotional damage … continues to unfold.”
Blassingame is allegedly “haunted by the memory of being attacked and the sensory impacts: the sights, sounds, smells and even tastes of the attack remain close to the surface,” the lawsuit states. ”
He experiences the guilt of not being able to help his colleagues who were simultaneously being attacked.
