Jacob Britton Emmendorfer was arrested Dec. 18 in the affair, according to court records. Emmendorfer was arraigned Monday, December 21, by Kalamazoo County District Judge Richard Santoni. He is charged with three felonies, including murder, child abuse and first degree criminal s*xual assault.
Meilani was found unconscious when first responders arrived at the crime scene around 10 p.m., according to authorities. A couple of hours later, the girl passed away after being transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital. The Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s Office had determined that the boy’s death was a homicide.
According to MLive, Portage’s chief of public safety, Nicholas Armold, said that Emmendorfer was the estranged boyfriend of the victim’s mother. “This is, was, a very difficult incident to have to respond to and investigate. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of this innocent child. ”
“Overall, this is just a sad incident,” shared Armold. Emmendorfer is currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail without bail and is said to be required to return to the Kalamazoo County District Court on December 29 for a probable cause conference.

Police revealed that Emmendorfer has been charged with three serious crimes, including criminal s*xual conduct, child abuse and outright murder. He was also the ex-boyfriend of the boy’s late mother. Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting spoke to MLive and said: “I am grateful that we can authorize the charges in this tragedy. However, it is important to realize that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and we are only at the beginning of a long process in the criminal justice system. ”
Meilani’s death was the second of a young child at the Portage apartment complex this year. In March, earlier this year, Royalty Houston-Hooper was killed by a woman who police say was dating the boy’s father. On December 10, 22-year-old Tranaya Spencer pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child abuse in the third degree in the March case.
Police and fire rescue personnel responded to the incident at a residence in the 6100 block of Cóndor Court, at 10 p.m. August 12th. Upon arrival, they found the little girl unresponsive, police reported at the time.
Spencer, who admitted to hitting the girl’s head against the wall and shaking her while she was unconscious, will be sentenced Jan. 4 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court.
When officers arrived at the crime scene, they found two-year-old Royalty in an upstairs bathroom without breathing as Spencer attempted to resuscitate the boy. The girl died four days later from complications from her injuries.
