Who was Isabella Emma Pearce ?

Isabella Emma Pearce died at Princess Alexandria Hospital on January 31 of this year after two 10-year-old boys found her in a park in south Brisbane.

Her death was two days after she went on her bike and said to her father, ‘I will never go home, Dad.’

Death

“The hospital wanted to keep her alive so she didn’t have to die on her birthday, but it didn’t make sense,” Pearce, 57, told the Courier Mail.

He said that he felt angry at the thought of Bella’s unfulfilled potential and wondered if he could have persuaded her daughter to reconsider her actions.

Pearce, along with his wife Fiona, believe that Queensland’s children’s mental health system disappointed her vulnerable daughter when she needed support the most.

Ms. Peace said that on that unfortunate day in January, Bella was ‘inconsolable’ after breaking up with her boyfriend and told her over the phone what she planned to do.

“I told her to wait on her, that all of us and her friends loved her so much, and that I was on my way to her, but it wasn’t enough,” she said.

She explained that her daughter had been a happy child but that she began to have problems with her mental health during puberty.

In 2018, she attended the prestigious Our Lady’s College Catholic school in Annerley and was severely bullied while she was in Year 10, when she attempted suicide in August.

Bella attempted suicide again and was given a seven-day ‘safety plan’ to prevent further attempts.

The teenager transferred to Loreto College in Coorparoo, where she found a better network of friends, but continued to struggle with her inner demons.

In October 2019, Bella attempted suicide again and was given a seven-day ‘safety plan’ to prevent further attempts.

In her senior year of high school, the teenager called her mother from the Coorparoo campus and told her that she was feeling suicidal.

Ms. Pearce said that she took her daughter to Queensland Children’s Hospital for treatment from someone in the mental health unit.

“She should have filed a formal complaint because this person made fun of Bella’s suffering and made her feel worse about herself, if that was possible,” she said.

The heartbroken mother said she believed her daughter would still be alive if she was admitted to the hospital that day.

Ms Pearce said the ‘horribly broken’ mental health system

However, Bella was simply told to go back on the waiting list to see a psychiatrist, a process that could take several months.

Ms Pearce said the ‘horribly broken’ mental health system needed to have places for teens like Bella who are in a critical situation.

“We need an emergency center, specifically dedicated to helping these children, because there are many who lack resilience,” she said.

More than 500 people attended a tribute to Bella held at her younger brother Josh’s school, St Laurence’s College, on February 17.

In the last photo that the teenager posted on her Instagram account, dozens of her friends and loved ones continue to share her pain.

“I’m sitting in the car, sobbing at how much I miss your voice,” said one.

I miss you tonight. I hope you are well up there my angel, ‘she wrote for a second.

‘I love you, I wish you were here for my 18, it’s not the same without you pretty,’ commented a third.

A GoFundMe page was created for the family to collect donations for funeral expenses and bills from her friend Alicia Stinchcombe.

“Bella was looking forward to her 18th birthday with great excitement,” she wrote.

“She was an incredible young woman with a smile that could light up a room, a laugh that would fill an entire house, and a personality as big as an ocean.”
