Who is Howard Beckett?
A candidate for the leadership of one of Britain’s largest trade unions was accused of racism last night after he called for the deportation of Priti Patel.

The tweet, in response to an attempt to deport two asylum seekers in Glasgow, read: “Priti Patel should be deported, not refugees. She can agree with anyone else who supports institutional racism. She is disgusting. ”
This sparked an immediate backlash, with social media users telling Beckett that he was a “racist” and warning that his comment “sounded like BNP.”

Gurinder Singh Josan, a member of the Labor Party’s ruling National Executive Committee, who is also a member of Unite, tweeted: ”
“ I totally disagree on almost everything with Priti Patel, but this is simply dog-whistling racism against a woman of color. Delete this now! ”
Beckett initially refused to back down, arguing that his tweet was “about society that can do without anyone promoting racism.”
However, he deleted it last night and wrote: “I am very sorry for my previous tweet. I was angry to see Muslim refugees being deported on the morning of Eid Al Fitr.”
Miss Patel was born in London after her parents came to Britain from Uganda in the 1960s. Beckett is the closest lieutenant to the outgoing McCluskey and is currently the deputy general secretary.
The dispute came after protesters in Glasgow yesterday prevented Border Force officers from detaining two Indian nationals.
The men, suspected of “immigration crimes”, were released after hundreds of protesters surrounded the van in which they were detained in a one-day standoff.
