Who is Henry Tarrio?

Enrique Tarrio is the president of the Proud Boys, a far-right, neo-fascist, men-only political organization. In 2020, he was a candidate in the Republican primary for Florida’s 27th congressional district, but withdrew. Tarrio is the Florida state director of the grassroots organization Latinos for Trump.

After 2004, Tarrio moved to a small town in North Florida to manage a poultry farm. Then he returned to Miami. He has also founded a security equipment installation company and another that provides GPS tracking for businesses.

Tarrio owns a t-shirt business in Miami known as 1776 Shop, an online seller of right-wing goods. Slate described the 1776 Shop as a “free online emporium for far-right merchandise” that sells a variety of Proud Boys items, including T-shirts that say “Pinochet did nothing wrong.”

Arrested and charged

Tarrio told The Washington Post that he joined the burning of the Black Lives Matter banner and said he would plead guilty to destroying property and pay the cost to the church.

“We just want justice to be served,” the Rev. Dr. Ianther Mills, Asbury’s senior pastor, said in an interview Monday.

Mills said Asbury saw another Black Lives Matter sign removed from its location over the Christmas holidays, prompting her to formally request additional protection for the church during protests planned for Wednesday. Local police have already begun conducting additional surveillance in the area, he said.

A police spokesman told The Associated Press last month that investigators were looking into the incidents as possible hate crimes, but that no charges had been brought against Tarrio.

Tarrio did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the allegations, and it was not immediately clear if Tarrio had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Between May 30, 2020 and Monday, Metro Police said 655 people, including 26 minors, were arrested on curfew violations and riot-related charges. Just over a quarter were from Maryland, while 41% were from the district.
