Who is Henry Richard?

Henry Richard, 20, was filmed smiling and hugging loved ones as he crossed the finish line on Monday. He was just 10 years old when his eight-year-old brother Martin was one of three victims killed in the April 2015 terrorist blast.

Richard’s sister, Jane, also lost a leg in the blast. She was among 264 people injured in the attack.

On Monday, however, Henry, a Boston native from the Dorchester neighborhood, hugged his parents and his sister after completing the 26.2-mile race in four hours, two minutes and 20 seconds.

He did so while wearing a yellow MR8 tank top for The Martin Richard Foundation, a non-profit organization that values inclusion, kindness, justice and peace.

“I did it for both of us, for my sister and for the rest of my family…I love this city…This is Boston Strong.” Henry told WBZ, a local radio station.

Victim

The other two victims of the attack were Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford, Massachusetts; Lu Lingzi, a 23-year-old Chinese national and a graduate student in statistics at Boston University.

MIT police officer Sean Collier died on April 18, 2013, three days after the bombing, after being fatally shot near the university campus by the same two perpetrators identified as responsible for the terror attack.

In March this year, the Supreme Court reinstated the death sentence for 28-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who had been found guilty of all 30 charges brought against him, including the murder of Collier during the manhunt that followed the bombings.

Tsarnaev is from Kyrgyzstan and is of Chechen and Avar descent. He and his family came to the United States on a tourist visa in 2002 before applying for asylum. Tsarnaev became a naturalized US citizen in 2012 and was a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the time of the attacks.

Twin pressure cooker bombs exploded on Boylston Street nine years ago, where medical workers helped injured people near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

His brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev immigrated to the US in 2004 at the age of 18 and was an aspiring boxer. He was killed in a shootout with police in the Boston suburb of Watertown on the same day as Collier’s death. He was 26 years old at the time.

Dzhokhar allegedly told federal investigators during questioning that he and his brother attacked Times Square in New York City after the Boston bombings.

He added that both he and Tamerlan became radicalized after watching video lectures by Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemeni-American imam who was killed in 2011 in Yemen by an American drone attack ordered by then-President Barack Obama.
