A US citizen has admitted responsibility for the death of teenage motorcyclist Harry Dunn in a case that has sparked a diplomatic spat between the US and British governments.

Anne Sacoolas, 45, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey, via video link, to causing her death by careless driving.

Dunn, 19, died following an accident outside a US military base in Northamptonshire in August 2019.

Her mother, Charlotte Charles, said that she had already kept her promise.

Judge Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb said Sacoolas would be sentenced at the end of November.

“I order that Mrs. Sacoolas attend court in person to be sentenced,” the judge added.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) accepted her guilty plea to the lesser charge.

Death by reckless driving carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, but community punishment or a suspended jail sentence is often imposed.

Ms Charles said: “We just had to put our faith in our justice system, and we always had faith in our justice system, and we had to trust them to carry out whatever process they saw fit.

“We’ve never put any investment of thought or effort or personal time into worrying about it.”

She said the family “didn’t want to separate her from her children, it’s not her fault.”

“Getting to court and getting to where we are now has been the most monumental thing for me because I can talk to [Harry] now and tell him that we did it, I fully promise,” Ms Charles added.

Sacoolas left RAF Croughton and then drove 350 meters (1,148 ft) on the wrong side of the road for over 20 seconds.

He hit Mr. Dunn, who was riding his motorcycle on the correct side of the road.

Sacoolas obtained diplomatic immunity on his behalf from the US administration following the collision near RAF Croughton. He left the UK 19 days later.

CPS made the decision to charge Sacoolas with causing the death by dangerous driving in December 2019.

But an extradition request to bring her to the UK was rejected by the US government, sparking a diplomatic spat between the two countries.

Sacoolas’ guilty plea brings legal resolution to the Dunn family after a three-year wait for justice.
