                                          Hannah Cobley Biography

Who was Hannah Cobley?

A woman who wrapped her newborn baby in plastic bags and left her to die on farmland lost an appeal against her murder conviction.

Hannah Cobley, from Leicestershire, was jailed for life with a minimum sentence of 18 years in 2019.

The 31-year-old woman argued that recent medical evidence suggested she may have had a diminished liability defense.

But the Court of Appeals found that her conviction after a trial “was not undermined” by the evidence.

In April 2017, Cobley, before Broughton Road, gave birth in an outdoor bathroom after hiding the pregnancy from her.

Her judgment heard that she, instead of calling for medical assistance, she banged her daughter’s head against the toilet tiles.

He also forced an object down the baby’s throat before leaving her in an overgrown area of the Stoney Stanton farm where she lived with her parents.

Prosecutors said she murdered the boy “with chilling clarity of purpose.” A post-mortem examination revealed that the baby suffered three skull fractures and survived two hours before dying.

Court of Appeal, Lady Justice Macur

During the Court of Appeals ruling, Lady Justice Macur said that Cobley’s defense intended to call in a consulting psychiatrist at trial to give evidence that an acute stress reaction could explain their actions and provide a liability defense. diminished.

However, after seeing her testify, the psychiatrist said that she “no longer believed that her mental functioning had been sufficiently disturbed to explain her actions.”

After she was found guilty, her lawyers found a new psychiatrist who said she suffered from symptoms of a moderately severe depressive disorder with characteristics of complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

But during her trial, the court heard that Cobley searched the Internet for “what happens if she drops a newborn baby” and “how long a newborn baby can last without milk and in the freezing cold.”

Lady Justice Macur said those searches “related to the act of harming a newborn child before the estimated time of the child’s birth” undermined the new psychiatric evidence.

She added: “Internet searches and contemporary [Cobley] accounts and conversations do not support the proposition that she was delusional or that the fatal event was spontaneous.”
