The actress, who played Mrs Mack in the long-running soap opera, died on Tuesday, her family confirmed.

They added in a statement: “She passed quietly on Tuesday, November 9, at her home and surrounded by her beloved family.

Bobby Hain, managing director of broadcasting for STV, paid tribute to the actress. He said: ‘We at STV are very sad to hear the news about Gwyneth Guthrie.

For 20 years, Gwyneth played the iconic Mrs Mack on Take The High Road, bringing her own wonderful comedic beat and dramatic flair that made her loved across the UK.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to her family at this sad time.”

Fans soon paid tribute, with Twitter users writing: ‘Properly upset that Gwyneth Guthrie AKA Mrs. Mack from TAKE THE HIGH ROAD has died …
