Guramrit Hanspal Biography
Who is Guramrit Hanspal?
A Long Island man who hasn’t paid his mortgage in more than 20 years received another free court pass this week after hiring a new attorney.
Guramrit Hanspal, 52, hasn’t spent a penny on his East Meadow home since he paid a single mortgage payment in 1998, but he has avoided eviction through lawsuits and bankruptcies for decades, files say. .
The house, which was foreclosed on years ago, is now owned by Diamond Ridge Partners, who took Hanspal to court to try to evict him from the property for good.
At Wednesday’s hearing in Nassau County Courthouse, Judge William A. Hohauser agreed to postpone the case after Guramrit Hanspal’s attorney, William D. Friedman, requested more time and argued that his attorney David Gevanter had been hired. Yesterday.
“This is the last of about 40 attorneys to show up the night before the hearing,” said Judge Jordan Katz, Diamond Ridge’s disgruntled attorney.
“This is typical of the defendant: he recycles attorneys to save more time,” said Max Sold, who works for Diamond Ridge. “This guy practically makes fun of the dishes.”
At the hearing, Friedman accused Katz of using “scandalous language.”
Contacted by phone after the concert, Friedman refused to make Hanspal available for an interview.
When asked why Hanspal failed to pay the mortgage, the attorney blamed Governor Cuomo’s moratorium on evictions in March 2020, arguing that the governor made paying rent a “moral obligation.” He hung up after a Post reporter discovered that his client’s non-payment was 20 years before the pandemic.
COVID-19 protection, which restricts evictions, should not apply to Hanspal, Katz said, as Hanspal does not legally inhabit the home, he said.
“We do not believe that the law was created to protect these people,” he said.
