Psaki & Mecher Met Through Work at the DCCC
Mecher and Psaki became known for their common interest in politics. When their paths first crossed in 2006, they were both working with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. According to The Washington Post, Psaki had just started a new job in the communications department and Mecher was deputy director of finance.
In his first interactions with the phone, Psaki accidentally gave Mecher the wrong instruction about an incident. Mecher was traveling with Rahm Emanuel, then president of the DCCC. As Psaki explained to the Post, he “had no sense of direction” and was concerned that the group would be upset when they finally arrived. However, Mecher said that after meeting Psaki face to face, he quickly forgot about the disaster because he thought he was attractive.
Mecher and Psaki traveled frequently, but Washington, D.C. He had tables together at his headquarters. Mecher told the Post that he would walk past Psaki’s desk and fight for his attention. “Whenever I do, he’s putting on the headphones, he’s talking on the phone, the BlackBerry he’s typing, and the actual computer in front of him talking to someone else,” Mecher said. So there was no way to accidentally get his attention.
Mecher was nervous about asking Psaki to make an appointment. But he told the Post that he finally mustered the courage to ask him out via email in September 2006. Sparks flew and the two began a romantic relationship.
But when Psaki moved to Chicago to work on the Obama presidential campaign in early 2007, he was quickly put to the test. For the next year and a half, Psaki and Mecher had a long-distance relationship that included late-night phone calls due to Psaki’s rush on a travel show. Mecher told Post: “The longest time without seeing each other was 36 days. And counted. And it was long. And it was difficult. ”
However, neither of them thought about ending the relationship because they both knew that the campaign would eventually end. Mecher added that he understood what Psaki was going through on a daily basis, while working on John Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004.
Mecher and Psaki moved in together after the 2008 election ended, and Mecher proposed a few months later. Mecher explained to the Washington Post that the day after he proposed to Psaki, he spoke by phone with his former boss, Rahm Emanuel.
“Only Rahm can congratulate you with some f-bombs,” Mecher said. Mecher added that Emanuel liked to “get a share” by promoting Mecher and Psaki.
The couple married in May 2010. The wedding took place at Woodlawn Farm in Ridge, Maryland, according to the New York Times. A Protestant minister led the ceremony.
According to the wedding announcement, Psaki was working at the time as the White House’s deputy communications director. Mecher worked on Capitol Hill. He was chief of staff for Democratic Rep. Steve Driehaus of Ohio.
Mecher was born in September 1976 and grew up in southern Ohio. According to the wedding announcement, Mecher’s mother taught fourth grade at a Catholic elementary school in Cincinnati. Her father, Hebron, worked as a mechanical engineer in Kentucky.

Mecher began working in politics when he was a college student. Mecher’s last assignment was Chief of Staff to Representative Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts. Kennedy began serving in Congress in 2013, but lost a Senate bid in 2020. Democrats challenged incumbent Senator Ed Markey in the primaries and lost more than 10 percent, NPR reported.
