Gregory Livingston Biography
Who is Gregory Livingston ?
A former Tennessee police officer has been charged with second-degree murder after an argument with a man about loud music from the man’s car.
Gregory Livingston, 54, was working as a security guard at a Kroger in Memphis when he had a verbal argument with Alvin Motley at the supermarket’s gas station Saturday night, according to an affidavit received from The Associated Press.
Authorities said Motley was holding a can of beer and a lit cigarette when Livingston approached. Livingston then pulled out a pistol and shot Motley in the chest.
Motley was pronounced dead instantly when authorities arrived.
Livingston is a retired police officer in Horn Lake, Mississippi, a spokesman for the Horn Lake Police Department told WMC-TV. He was an officer from August 1998 until his resignation in April 2001, a division chief said.
Renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump has announced that he has been hired to represent the victim’s family.
“My heart breaks for the Motley family as they mourn the tragic and preventable loss of Alvin,” Crump wrote in a statement. “Kroger and companies that employ security guards have the ultimate responsibility to train their employees and contractors and equip them with escalation reduction techniques, similar to the training we have received for law enforcement. ”
He continued: “There is no reason why a black man trying to fill up his car should lose his life because his music is louder than a security guard would prefer. I do not have doubts. In my opinion, this crime motivated that a white person who played loud music in similar circumstances would be alive. ”
The Crump and Motley families will hold a press conference at Olive CME Church in Memphis on Tuesday.
Crump has represented the Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd families.
