After finishing his time at Sacramento State as a player, he transitioned to a coaching job. He held a variety of different roles from 1986 to 1994 as running back coach, wide receiver coach, and eventually rose to offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
After developing his skills in college play, Knapp was ready to make the jump to the NFL in 1995 and never looked back.
The veteran coach would end up spending the next 26 years of his life at the professional level in seven different locations, including two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and the then Oakland Raiders, respectively.
More recently, he was poised to enter his 26th season in the professional category as a member of the Jets coaching staff, 22 of which were as an offensive coordinator or quarterback coach.
“I was very fortunate to be coached by him,” NFL analyst and former quarterback Dan Orlovsky said on ESPN. “Knapper embodies everything an assistant coach should. The joy of investing in your players. He was a coach who first made me feel like I belong. He is highly respected in the league and his family is in our thoughts and prayers. ”
Stories of people who knew him better
Former Broncos QB coach Greg Knapp dies after bicycle accident Greg Knapp was an integral part of the Denver Broncos’ success from 2013-16.2021-07-22T21: 56: 11Z
Shortly after the tragic news spread through social media, I reached out to several people in the league who had the opportunity to work with and alongside him.
When I asked those who worked with him what caught their attention, I kept getting the same message, “a nice guy who always took time for me if I had a question.”
Knapp had a “genuine love of the game” and planned to train for another decade. Benjamin Allbright, who covers the Broncos for KOA Colorado, said that Coach Knapp was an “integral part” of the team’s Super Bowl championship team:
In 2013, they set a variety of records with an offense spearheaded by professional American Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
Although during the 2015 season, Manning was not the same player due to a variety of injury problems. Those setbacks saw him miss six games and Knapp was a key cog in grooming the other quarterbacks, primarily Brock Osweiler, leading to soccer’s immortality.
One of Knapp’s most attractive traits was his positive attitude that rubbed off on everyone around him. Kelsey Conway, a reporter for the Atlanta Falcons team, shared something that caught her eye during their time together from 2018 to 2020:
Everyone I spoke to Knapp seemed to have a zest for life and the passion for his players is what drove him to keep training year after year.
While he accomplished many incredible things on the soccer field, Knapp was “an even better man, father and husband to his family and those around him.”
Jeff Sperbeck, Greg Knapp’s agent, confirmed the news in a statement saying that the veteran coach was “called back to Heaven, where he will meet with his father.”
After being hit by a car on Saturday July 17, Knapp was “immediately unconscious and never regained consciousness.”
He is survived by his wife Charlotte and three daughters (Camille, Natalie and Jordan).
