Greg Ferency Biography
Who was Greg Ferency?
The gunman arrived and waited outside the building before shooting Greg Ferency, a 30-year veteran detective with the Terre Haute Police Department, FBI agents said. It is unclear if Ferency was the target or if the suspect, who was shot by an FBI agent, intended to harm the police in general.
Ferency was a beloved and respected member of the Terre Haute Police Department, his colleagues said during a news conference Thursday. He was also the father of two adult children.
“You’ll never meet a better person,” Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen said. “He was an amazing person. I can’t say that enough.”wikipedia

Where was Ferency killed?
Police responded to reports of an officer firing at a building housing the FBI’s Indianapolis Residents Agency on 1st Street around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, behind the Palace of Justice of the Region of Vigo.
The small building is located on Wabash Court on 1st Street and is surrounded by a black wrought iron fence. An area of blocks surrounding the building remained crossed out Thursday.
What was the shooter’s motive?
What led to the shooting has not been made public and the motive is unclear. In a statement Wednesday, the FBI said Ferency had been “ambushed.” On Thursday, investigators said the suspect arrived at the building and waited for an opportunity to shoot the detective. What was not clear was whether the attack was aimed at Farency or the police in general.
In a statement Wednesday, the FBI said Ferency “was ambushed and fatally shot.” The FBI will lead the investigation into the shooting. FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Keenan said an agent heard gunshots, intervened and shot the suspect, who is being held at the hospital.
Have police identified a suspect?
Due to the suspect’s injuries, investigators have been unable to obtain a statement from the shooter. Officials declined to identify the suspect while pending charges were filed. Those charges could come as early as Thursday.
Keen said that he had known Ferency for more than 20 years. The two were neighbors before the chief joined the police force, he said.
“There was nothing he did that he didn’t put 100% into,” Keen said.
Ferency “was a valued member of our FBI family” since 2010, Keenan said.
Ferency was first assigned to the Safe Streets Task Force, which investigates gangs and violent crime, Keenan said. Later, Ferency worked in the FBI’s Joint Counter-Terrorism Task Force.
“They have to be kind of an expert here and work on whatever federal crime comes their way,” Keenan said of the Terre Haute task force officers.
Gov. Eric Holcomb called the incident a “tragic event” and “pointless” in a statement Wednesday.
“Our hearts break for Detective Greg Ferency’s family, loved ones and those who served with him every day protecting the residents of the Wabash Valley,” said Holcomb’s statement.
Just over three years ago, 16-year-old Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts died in the line of duty after he was shot by a homicide suspect. Seven years prior to that, Terre Haute Officer Brent Long was killed while serving an arrest warrant with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
