Linden’s mother called the police on the day of the shooting to ask for help for her son who was suffering from a “mental breakdown.”
Video from the body camera
Body camera video, released Monday, shows Barton asking police to detain his son and take him to hospital due to violent threats and uncontrollable behavior.
The mother tells the police that her son has law enforcement related triggers and that he has access to a BB gun or accessory weapon, but does not think he has a real gun.
The police responded that they should treat the situation as if he possibly had a weapon.
During the recording, a police officer can be heard expressing apprehension at the idea of trying to apprehend the boy.
“If there is no one at home, no one is in danger … but he is not injured, sorry, I will not shoot,” we heard. .
The videos show police officers approaching the home and then starting to chase the boy, at one point, through a wooden fence.
Cameron is seen walking slowly while ignoring requests to get to the ground.
An officer opens fire and eleven shots are heard on the tapes.
Cameron rolls on the floor saying, “I’m not feeling well” and then, “Tell my mom that I love her.”
Barton told CNN earlier this month that the boy’s injuries included damage to his shoulder, ankles, intestines, bladder and colon.
The Salt Lake City Police Department declined to comment on Barton’s claim that Cameron was unarmed.
No weapons are seen in the body camera footage, although the video is poorly lit and Cameron is wearing dark clothing.
“I am very saddened by this tragic situation,” Chief Mike Brown told a news conference Monday.
“As the father of three young children, he had a huge impact on me personally,” Brown said.
He did not elaborate on the investigation.
Mayor Erin Mendenhall echoed the chief’s sentiments, saying: “As a member of this community and as a mother of a 14-year-old boy, I am deeply heartbroken and frustrated.
