Gloria Pepin was the wife of Jacques Pepin, a French-born American chef, cookbook author, culinary instructor, television personality, and artist. Born in New York City, Gloria lived in Redbank, New Jersey, for much of her youth. When she was in high school, she traveled to Cuba with some friends and ended up fighting in Castro’s war. In her early twenties, Gloria was enjoying an exciting life running a studio in the music industry.
She was of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent. Her mother was from Puerto Rico and her father was born in Cuba. Her Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage had some influence on her husband’s cooking in dishes like chicken with rice and black bean soup. Jacques and Gloria opened La Potagerie, a small soup restaurant on Fifth Avenue, between 45th and 46th streets, in New York City, in 1970. In 1976, they bought a dilapidated house on four acres in Madison, CT, and they worked together to completely renovate the property itself. Later they opened Gloria’s French Café in Madison.

The statement read: It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Gloria Evelyn Augier Pépin, the author’s wife and life force, television personality and culinary instructor Jacques Pépin … We are overwhelmed by grief, but Gloria was a fighter: a strong , a resistant woman, who does not shed tears. Surely, she would urge us to continue living our lives and continue to do the work that we needed to do … Instead of flowers, Gloria wanted condolence gifts given to the food insecurity or animal welfare charity of her choice. Gloria is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Jacques, her daughter Claudine and her granddaughter Shorey.
