Who is Gaven Leon ?

An 18-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of a man shot while driving on the Northwest Side.

A teenager allegedly used a “ghost gun” to fire from a third-story Irving Park apartment out onto the street below, killing a passing motorist in what prosecutors described as a completely “random” shooting.

Arrested and Charged

Gaven Leon was arrested Sunday in the 5500 block of West Grand Avenue. Authorities believe he shot a 30-year-old man in the eye while the victim was driving on Feb. 3 in the 4000 block of North Pulaski.

After his arrest, gunshot residue was located on Leon’s windowsill and on the clothes he was seen wearing in the video recorded just after the shooting, Murphy said.

Leon is due back in court for a hearing June 13.

The man died as a result of the shooting two days later.

Leon was charged with first degree murder.

Shooting

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. m., as Leon sat in his bedroom inside an apartment overlooking the intersection of Irving Park and Pulaski Road. According to Murphy, Balbag and his friends were stopped at that intersection.

Leon allegedly had a non-serialized “ghost gun” equipped with a green laser, which he aimed out the window at the vehicle below and fired one shot. Murphy said the gun jammed, but Leon reloaded and fired again.

Balbag received a blow to the head and was taken to hospital where he later died.

According to Murphy, another person inside the apartment saw Leon shoot at the truck, and later confessed to a friend that he had shot at the vehicle because it was being “too loud.”

After he was identified and arrested, police recovered multiple videos and phone pictures of Leon of him “trolling” police during their investigation of the shooting, Murphy said. In a video recorded just after the shooting, Leon allegedly filmed police cars with their lights and sirens on, saying, “This is legendary footage here.”

According to Murphy, Leon could be heard laughing as he said, “Who would do such a thing? Thanks for coming, I appreciate it. They said someone started shooting, I also know who did it, I also know who was shooting. … This sh*t is so much fun.”
