Who is Gary Lineker ?

Gary Lineker is facing a showdown with councilors after he failed to apply for planning permission for four air conditioning units in his £4m home.

The 61-year-old Match of the Day host was forced to seek consent to keep the unauthorized cooler boxes.

He will find out next month if he will be given retroactive permission for the boxes to remain at his four-story Victorian home in Barnes, south-west London.

Planning chiefs could order the former England and Tottenham striker to shoot down units.

But he is believed to be confident of victory, as he paid for a report that suggests the units are not a noise nuisance and are much quieter than planes flying over the flight path to land at Heathrow.

Linker erected the other four new boxes in February of last year at his home

While privately the famous well-paid BBC presenter has been worrying about how to keep his house cool, publicly he has been addressing the question of how less wealthy people heat their homes.

Yesterday, as record utility bills were announced, Lineker tweeted: “Looks like we’re at a point of financial trouble with rising inflation, rising energy costs and fears of the Brexit project coming to fruition.” . Maybe raise the top tax rate for the rich to help us out (and, yes, I include myself). Maybe even the super rich non dom could help… greed sucks.’

As well as being in favor of higher taxes for the wealthy, Lineker has also been a vocal advocate for measures to curb global warming, and has previously supported the campaign work of Greta Thunberg, who some might think is uncomfortable with the home air conditioning.

It’s unclear if their units have any special measures to make them less impactful on the environment, but environmentalists generally frown on air conditioning as a first-world luxury that’s helping fuel global warming: a recent Guardian report called air conditioning units as “almost uniquely energy-hungry appliances” and said that “a small unit cooling a single room, on average, consumes more energy than running four refrigerators, while a central unit cooling a average house uses more energy than 15′.

And Lineker’s house is considerably larger than average.

However, the environmental impact is not addressed in the panoramic request for it.

Linkeker is applying through an agent to keep six air conditioning units in his 1899 home in a local conservation area.

Planning documents confirm that two of the now “obsolete and non-operational” units were already installed when he bought the house for £2.92 million in 2012.

Therefore, they are immune from enforcement measures, since they were installed more than four years ago.

Linker erected the other four new boxes in February of last year at his home, which is designated a Building of Townscape Merit, though it is not listed.

His request says that he wants to take three of the boxes down a side hall and move a fourth out of a front bedroom onto a balcony “so they won’t be disturbed.”

The other two will remain out of the kitchen and a gym in the house that Lineker converted from apartments to a single family home after he bought it.

Environmental health expert David Horrocks conducted acoustic tests on the four new air conditioning units on Lineker’s behalf to prove they were not a noise nuisance.

He said in his report: ‘There were already two external air conditioning units on the property when he purchased it.

‘In February 2021, Mr. Lineker installed a further four external air conditioning units to provide comfort cooling to various rooms within the property. It is intended to relocate four of these units to make them less of a nuisance.

Mr Horrocks carried out his tests again, using Norsonic noise meters

“The daytime noise climate in this part of London is dominated by low-flying aircraft on their descent route to Heathrow, where aircraft flyovers are typically experienced every 60 seconds.

“This made it very difficult to record meaningful noise measurements close to the source of the mechanical plant during the day.”

Horrocks said the four units were “extremely quiet by design” and were between 10 feet (3 m) and 33 feet (10 m) from any windows in the neighboring house.

He said he first visited the house in October last year when Lineker demonstrated how the units worked, along with his agent and a Frostbite UK representative who installed them.

Mr Horrocks carried out his tests again, using Norsonic noise meters ‘in the dead of night’ on 23 December when there were no aircraft flights to ‘contaminate’ the measurements.

His report stated: “I observed that in each case, the noise levels were modest when the noise was constant and continuous, with no obvious or noticeable tones.”

He added that the noise was only slightly higher than background sound levels and was “unlikely to make a significant contribution to the pre-existing day/night noise climate”.

Mr. Horrock said a boundary wall is likely to further shield neighboring properties from noise from units that was “unlikely to be perceived or measured” within neighboring properties, even when windows were open.

Officials from the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Richmond Council are expected to make a decision on Lineker’s application next month.

It is believed that so far there have been no objections or noise complaints from neighbors.

Other famous residents who live nearby include former footballer Lee Dixon, TV presenter Holly Willoughby, singer Katherine Jenkins, and Life on Mars star Philip Glenister.

Lineker got the go-ahead to convert the four-story house into a single house with two extensions after he bought it.

It now boasts a media room, steam room, lounge area and comfy spot, and is believed to be worth £4,766,000 according to property website Zoopla.
