Gabriel Calin Biography
Who is Gabriel Calin?
Convicted criminal Gabriel Calin, 29, followed his 19-year-old victim, whom he did not know, for several minutes as he walked home from work through Maidstone in Kent in 2019.
She screamed as he grabbed her from behind her, before grabbing her hands and wrists, smiling and telling her ‘she’s fine’.
Then, without warning from her, she punched him in the nose, knocking her to the ground. As he lay on his back, Calin grabbed her jacket with one hand and punched her at least twice more across the face with his other fist.
Her repeated blows split her lip, knocked out one tooth and damaged two more, causing her blood to spurt from her wounds.
The victim fought back by kicking Calin in the stomach and eventually ran off, Maidstone Crown Court was told.
Calin later sought hospital treatment for his own injured hand, no doubt caused by the beatings the victim received from him, prosecutor Gordon Ross said. He fled the UK five days later and returned to Romania, where his wife and two children lived.
Images released by Kent Police show the moment he was finally extradited in July 2020.
Calin, homeless, denied attempting to cause grievous bodily harm at his trial last year, but a jury found him guilty after less than two hours of deliberation.
The prosecutor had told the court that the victim’s ordeal was “the stuff of nightmares: a completely unprovoked bizarre attack on a vulnerable young woman walking home alone.”
“They didn’t know each other, had never met and weren’t even known,” Ross said.
The injuries included a swollen nose, a cut lip, at least one broken tooth that had to be extracted and required extensive treatment, and bruising to his torso. That she didn’t suffer more serious injuries, she’s lucky.
But given the nature of the assault on a lone woman in the early morning in a quiet area of Maidstone where she was punched and, after falling to the ground, the accused continued to attack her, the prosecution say her intention could only have been to cause a serious damage.
CCTV footage played in court captured Calin leaving a gambling venue and then following the woman in the early hours of April 16, 2019 for about a kilometer on her 20-minute walk home from her shift at the Muggleton. Inn, owned by Wetherspoon, in the center of town. .
She at one point looked over her shoulder and, realizing she was being followed, she slowed her speed to let him pass.
But Calin then veered down a side street to back up and then sneak up on her from behind her.
Victim impact statements read in court detailed how she was unable to sleep, suffered from nightmares, needed counseling and “relived the assault like it was yesterday.”
Nearly three years later, she still has a toothache and no longer feels safe walking.
“I still get scared when people come up behind me and this feeling shows no signs of abating,” she wrote.
“This attack will stay with me for the rest of my life and I feel like I lost a small part of me that day that I will never get back.”
Calin himself went to Maidstone Hospital the next day for treatment on her hand, telling staff that she had fallen.
She then fled the UK on April 21, 2019, traveling by bus and arriving in Romania two days later. He was arrested at Heathrow airport on his return from Bucharest on July 29, 2020.
His legal team told the court that he had “drunk to excess” that night and that the attack was “very” out of character.
Calin did not testify at his trial and it was said in his sentencing report that he could not “understand or explain” his actions.
He is expected to be deported when he is released from prison.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Andy Julier of Kent Police said: “This was a despicable and cowardly attack on a young woman by a man who injured his hand, such was the force of the blows to the victim’s face.
“The investigation to locate him was exhaustive and complex, and I am pleased that we were able to bring him to justice to answer for his terrible crime.
“The victim has received ongoing dental treatment due to the assault and Calin’s callous actions continue to have a significant impact on his quality of life.
“I would like to commend his courage in supporting our investigation throughout and also thank the witnesses who helped us bring Calin to justice.”
