Fernando De Jesús López-García, 32, is accused of killing two people and injuring three others in a mass stabbing at the California Baptist church that houses the homeless on Sunday night.
A homeless man who was accused of killing two people and wounding three others in a San Jose church had been deported from the US three times and a series of convictions for violence have emerged.
The victims were an adult man who died at the scene and an adult woman who died at a local hospital.

De Jesus Lopez-Garcia was homeless and regularly used services at Grace Baptist Church, but he also volunteered at the church to help provide services to those in the homeless community.
He has a criminal record spanning 15 years that includes convictions for disturbing public order, giving false information to police, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison.
He had a pending domestic violence misdemeanor charge in Santa Clara County at the time the fatal stabbings occurred.

Mayor Sam Liccardo said López-García should not have been allowed to take to the streets, citing “multiple failures in the system.”

In those very rare circumstances where an undocumented offender has a history of prior violent or serious convictions, the county must act in accordance with (California) Securities Law when notifying ICE that a person will be released into the community.
‘In this case, I was told that the county received an arrest warrant from ICE, but did not notify ICE of the defendant’s release.
‘You should have been in jail, in federal custody, in drug treatment or in jail in your own country. But not on the streets of our community. ‘
David Jennings, director of ICE’s San Francisco removal operations field office, believes the attack could have been prevented.
Liccardo said Lopez-Garcia should not have been allowed on the streets
“Our hearts go out to the families of the two community members who have succumbed to stab wounds in the attack on the Grace Baptist Church center tonight,” Liccardo tweeted at 8:55 pm Sunday. ‘SJPD has arrested the suspect. Others are seriously injured and we keep them in our prayers. ‘
Mayor Liccardo tweeted: ‘Our hearts are torn for the victims and their loved ones of the horrific stabbing last night at Grace Baptist Church downtown; we have lost two members of the community. We pray for the recovery of other people seriously injured in that attack. We will provide more as information becomes available ‘
