Evan Thomas Silva, 26, was fatally wounded after a cannon fired at a party and projectiles were sent into Genesee County, Michigan, Saturday night.
A small number of family members attended the garden party to celebrate the expected arrival of the baby.
The small device fired in the backyard of a home by the owner detonated and sprayed debris that struck Silva, who was 10 to 15 feet away.
The 26-year-old was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint in serious condition, where he later died.
The Michigan State Police Bombing Squad, the Gaines City Fire Department and the Med Star Ambulance witnessed the scene.
Police said the victim was one of five people outside the residence when the cannon was fired. He was the only one who was hit by shrapnel.
Three parked cars and the garage where the baby shower took place were also hit by shrapnel.
