College student killed by stray bullet was on ‘dream trip’ to NYC, dad says
The young Indiana visitor who was killed by a stray bullet in Brooklyn early Saturday morning would have wanted his shooter to know that “he has already forgiven them,” his devastated father told The Post.
Ethan Williams, a 20-year-old college student from Indianapolis had been on a “dream trip” to New York and was sitting on a steps with a group of friends outside his Airbnb in Bushwick when he was shot in the chest around 2:30 am
Police believe he was an unintentional target of gunfire that hit the group from more than 200 feet away.
The shooter dropped his gun at the scene, law enforcement sources told The Post.
“Ethan would have wanted the shooter to know that he has already forgiven them,” his father, Jason Williams, said in a telephone interview Saturday night.
“I would have liked to be your friend.”
Ethan spent his life trying to give back to others, including doing missionary work with orphans in Rwanda while in high school, the father said.
While in high school, Ethan also founded an LGBTQ club, although he was not gay, because he was tired of seeing his peers being bullied, his father said.
“It’s hard to express how much he loved everyone,” Williams said. “I didn’t know a stranger.”As just a third grader, Ethan stood up for another boy who was being pushed on his school bus, telling his father, “I don’t like seeing other kids outcast,” his father recalls.

He spent time on the mayor’s youth council in Indianapolis, where he worked on issues like poverty and violence, and was considering a career in journalism, Williams said.

“He said that people should not define themselves by their worst moments,” said the distraught father.

He thanked the NYPD for their sensitivity, adding that he hopes Ethan’s body will be shipped back to Indianapolis next week for burial.
In a prepared statement, the family asked that anyone with information about the shooting of “our beautiful son” come forward and assist in the investigation.

“If I had the opportunity to say something to the shooter, we know that he would invite him for a cup of coffee and ask him to hear his story,” the statement said.
“He would forgive without delay. Ethan always saw beyond the surface and took the time to help others feel seen, important, and loved.
“The family appreciates the great amount of support,” the statement concluded.
“We ask for privacy as we cry and focus on figuring out what the world will be like without Ethan.”
