                                                  Emma Coronel Aispuro Biography

Emma Coronel Aispuro, a 31-year-old former beauty queen with US and Mexican citizenship, was arrested Monday in the first major arrest of a Joe Biden administration cartel.

She will appear in court on Tuesday before Judge Harvey G. Michael, accused of participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for the importation of her into the United States.

The trafficking charges range from 2014 to the extradition of her husband to the United States in January 2017.

While this is certainly a high-profile arrest for authorities, she is far from a major player in her own right. Many suspect that prosecutors will rely heavily on her to “turn around” something that, for someone so steeped in the culture of trafficking, may not be easy.

She is also accused of aiding Guzmán, now 63, in his infamous escape on July 11, 2015 through a tunnel dug under the Altiplano prison in Almoloya de Juárez, Mexico.

The US government case has the help of an informant, named only as ‘Collaborating Witness 1’, who testified that Coronel gave them $ 100,000 to help him escape from prison when he was recaptured in 2016, and $ 1 million in total.

Coronel, born in California, trafficking was a family affair.

His father, Inés Coronel Barreras, was a middle-ranking lieutenant in the Sinaloa Cartel, as was his brother, Omar.

Interceptions of Guzmán’s phone by the FBI showed him discussing business in 2011 with Ines, the father-in-law humiliating himself with the man he repeatedly refers to as ‘sir’.

“Make sure you erase everything every time we finish chatting,” Guzmán reminds his wife when she picks up the phone.

Inés and Omar were arrested in April 2013.

Coronel married Guzmán in 2007 in La Angostura, Durango, and gave birth to her twins on August 15, 2011.

The girls, Emali and Maria Joaquina, were born at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, California; on his birth certificates, the father’s name was left blank.

Coronel is accused in the court documents of having been in contact with Guzman’s sons, known as ‘Chapitos’, who are currently believed to be running the Sinaloa Cartel.

Four of Guzmán’s 15 known children, Iván, Jesús, Ovidio and Joaquín Jr, are mentioned in the indictment documents.

Ovidio was captured in October 2019 in Culiacán, a stronghold of the Sinaloa Cartel. He was later released amid a large-scale shooting with cartel members in broad daylight that left cars on fire and civilians running for cover, in a case that sparked much controversy for Mexican President Andrés Manuel. López Obrador.

Vigil, the former head of international operations for the DEA, who spent 20 years infiltrating the Mexican and Colombian cartels, told DailyMail.com that investigators would now attempt to use Coronel to catch other larger fish.

Colonel, Vigil said, will be pressured on the whereabouts of the children and of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, the 73-year-old man who was Guzmán’s right hand man.

“They have witnesses who cooperate and claim that she was communicating with the children,” he said.

And they know that she is very devoted to her daughters, so she will not want to be separated from them.

They will really pressure her to move.

Others were intrigued by the timing of Coronel’s arrest, related to the activity that, according to the charge sheet, stopped in 2017.

Several pointed out that his high-profile arrest of him came just months after the debacle of the arrest of former Mexican Defense Minister General Salvador Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos, who served under former President Enrique Peña Nieto, was accused by the US authorities of accepting bribes in exchange for protecting drug cartel leaders.

He was arrested at the request of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Los Angeles in October.

However, a month later, the Department of Justice agreed to return him to Mexico, in a move that surprised many within the State Department and internationally.

Mexico promised to try him in Mexico, with Marcelo Ebrard, the foreign minister, saying that “it would be very costly” for Mexico to “do nothing” after requesting that the charges against the former defense chief be dropped and that he be dropped. I returned home.

“He would be almost suicidal,” Ebrard said.

However, in January, Mexico declared that Cienfuegos had been exonerated and would not face further charges.

Arturo Sarukhan, Mexico’s ambassador to the United States from 2007 to 2013, tweeted that Coronel’s arrest was “likely related to a screw tightening after the Cienfuegos debacle.”
