Her father Carlos hers faced a distressing situation. He was the only person in her family of four to test negative for Covid-19 and was at her home in Brampton, Ontario with her two children while his wife was at Brampton Civic Hospital with oxygen.

Carlos was under strict self-isolation orders from public health authorities and was not sure if he should call an ambulance. He also knew that Brampton Civic was one of the hardest hit hospitals in the country and feared they might take her daughter to a more distant hospital in another Toronto suburb, Oakville.

Carlos was vaccinated on April 12, 2021, but his wife, still recovering in the hospital, has not yet received the vaccine.

He dialed 911 and was told to give Emily CPR. When paramedics arrived, they dragged Carlos and his son out of the room and tried to revive Emily. They even got her heart to beat again, but she wasn’t breathing. Then they took her to the hospital and soon Carlos received a call from the doctor telling him that she no longer exists.

Doctors said she had Covid-19 in addition to pneumonia. “To tell you the truth, she felt real when I found her in bed. I laid my head on her chest and couldn’t feel a thing. No heartbeat. No, nothing. She doesn’t breathe, ”Carlos said.
