A woman who was paralyzed from the chest down at 17 after being thrown off a bridge by a ‘jealous’ friend says she’s a ‘better person’ for it.

Emily Holliday, 20, was unable to walk again after a friend of hers threw her 25 feet off a bridge while she was walking home after a night in Solihull, Birmingham, in September 2018.

But the woman said that she feels ‘lucky to be here’ despite everything.

Ms. Holliday suffered catastrophic injuries and was told that she would not be able to walk again three years ago while she was returning home with a friend.

When they approached the canal bridge, a 17-year-old friend, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had been acting ‘irrationally’ and jealous towards Emily and accusing her of cheating on her then-boyfriend.wikipedia

Suddenly he scooped her up into his arms and threw her over the side of the bridge.

Birmingham Hospital

A terrified Ms. Holliday plummeted 25 feet to the ground, landing in the canal path below.

She said she heard a ‘massive crack’ from her spine on impact and remembers every ‘agonizing’ second of the fall.

The young woman was rushed to Birmingham Hospital, where she received the devastating news that she had cut her spinal cord and she would never walk again.

Her spinal cord was broken along with some vertebrae, four ribs and the sternum. Ms. Holliday’s lung was also punctured.

She was not allowed to sit for eight weeks and was then transferred to the Midland Center for Spinal Injuries for rehabilitation.

The young woman herself spent five and a half months in the hospital before she could go home.

Mrs Holliday, who is from Birmingham, West Midlands, said: ‘I remember the time when she picked me up and threw me.

“It is clear as day. I remember falling and hearing a massive “creak” when I landed on the embankment.

He couldn’t feel anything, he could only move his arms and he knew it wasn’t good. I woke up in the hospital and the doctors told me, “You will never walk again.”

‘It was absolutely heartbreaking to hear. Despite everything, I feel very lucky to be here, I had a second chance at life. ‘

Ms. Holliday knew the teenager for about five years, during school, and believed that he had “feelings” for her.

She said: ‘I think he was a bit obsessed with me, but I didn’t feel that way about him.

“ He was being very aggressive with me and he was saying nasty things, but I tried to ignore him. ”

The case finally reached Birmingham Crown Court in April 2019, where the teenager admitted to an injury charge and was sentenced to a two-year youth rehabilitation order.

Ms. Holliday said: “I was disappointed with the result. I don’t think it’s fair that he completely changed my life and got out of jail. ”

The 20-year-old underwent surgery in April 2021 and an MRI revealed a cyst growing on her spine.

While she still deals with daily pain, the young woman has a positive attitude.

She added: ‘I had to completely adjust my life and learn to do everything again. I lost everything I had, I no longer have a social life.

I will always stay strong and have worked very hard to get where I am today. I feel like a better person as I appreciate the little things more now.

I am very proud of myself and will always be grateful to be here.

“I have come this far in the last few years and I am very proud of myself.

I am alive, breathing and have the best people surrounding me and supporting me.
