What is company’s Nevada battery-electric plant?
Egor Igorevich Kryuchkov, 27, tried to persuade an anonymous employee at the company’s Nevada battery-electric plant to join the scheme multiple times, from July 15 to August 22.
Kryuchkov allegedly offered the employee $ 1 million in Bitcoin if he helped transmit the malware to the company network.
From there, Kryuchkov hoped to steal the company’s data, only to turn around and extort money from Tesla by threatening to reveal the data.
There have been no indications that the malware was used to hack into the company’s own cars.
Kryuchkov was arrested in late August while trying to flee the country after the employee he contacted, whom he once met, told company officials, who turned him over to the FBI.
The New York Daily News reports that Kryuchkov faces a maximum of 10 months in prison for intentionally causing damage to a protected computer.
Kryuchkov will be sentenced on May 10.
