Dylan McGinnis Biography
Who was Dylan McGinnis ?
An Indiana mother berated bail funds after a robbery and cocaine suspect was freed and ‘murdered her son’.
Nikki Sterling, the mother of 24-year-old Dylan McGinnis, who was shot and killed on October 1, is lashing out at The Bail Project after the organization helped remove suspected ‘killer’ Travis Lang, 23, from jail for possession of cocaine and robbery. charges in January.
The grieving mother was “shocked” to discover that the organization supported “violent criminals to get out [of jail]” by bailing inmates. She is one of many who have been heavily promoted on social media since the Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, raising cash to rescue those unable to post bail themselves.
“ If I can help prevent this from happening to any other family, then I would say that, you know, my life has had a purpose and it has also carried out my son’s legacy, who was always a great help to other people. ” Sterling said. .
Arrested and Charged
Lang was being held in jail for possession of cocaine and three felonies of burglary, resisting arrest and robbery before posting his bail. Lang was released in January after posting his bail of $ 5,650, which The Bail Project provided a portion of the fund, while his family paid the rest. How much the organization contributed is unknown.
The former inmate is now facing murder charges in the death of McGinnis.
Lang would end up ‘killing’ McGinnis after the 24-year-old teamed up with a friend who was dealing with substance abuse, who was making a drug deal with Lang to obtain Xanax and heroin, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The couple allegedly got into a dispute over the money and Lang got out of his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the couple’s car while demanding the money.
He reported that he said, ‘Give me my money before I start squeezing this [expletive],’ the Indianapolis Star reported, before shooting the girl in the leg and McGinnis several times.
Police said McGinnis sat in the car while his friend
Police said McGinnis sat in the car while his friend and Lang negotiated drugs. It is unclear when the woman returned to the car before Lang began shooting.
McGinnis’s mother said her son went to her friend because he “feared for her” and “always helped” others.
“ Just knowing Dylan and the type of person that she was, in my opinion, the chances are that I didn’t want her to be alone or for her to be alone. He was probably afraid for her, ” Sterling told Fox News.
Her family, her friends, the broken, the outcast, complete strangers. She was always there to help them, which, you know, unfortunately, got him into the situation that he was in on October 1, being there for a friend, ” he told Fox 59.
McGinnis and the unidentified woman were found by police with gunshot wounds around 11:30 p.m. on October 1. McGinnis was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds and the woman was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The Bail Project confirmed to Fox News that it provided funding in addition to Lang’s mother and fiancé, but “denounces all forms of violence.”
Fraternal Order of Police vice president Joe Gamaldi
“We denounce violence in all its forms, and it is never our intention to harm anyone,” The Bail Project’s chief operating officer David Gaspar told Fox News.
Sterling is not alone in criticizing The Bail Project. Fraternal Order of Police vice president Joe Gamaldi told Fox News that the organization and others like it are doing more harm than good.
“They are allowing people to donate and then they are linking violent criminals who are repeat offenders. I mean, this is not stealing a candy bar from Walmart. These are people who are committing murder, aggravated assault, ‘Gamaldi told the news organization.
“You know, I’ll be honest, I don’t think they give a damn about public safety,” criticized The Bail Project.
“They know exactly the people they are rescuing. They know these folks who already have multiple felony bonds and are helping them get another one. They know that some of these are very violent individuals, and you cannot look at this seriously and tell me that you care about the community in which you are operating. ‘
McGinnis is not the first victim to die after a bail bond organization helped get an inmate out of jail.
In August, George Howard, 48, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder after the Minnesota Freedom Fund rescued him after killing two people on I-94. He was jailed for domestic battery prior to bailing him out.
The Minnesota Freedom Fund, which is now under new leadership, said they will “continue to evaluate them to ensure we are responding to the safety and needs of our community.”
