Dr. Martin J. Tobin is an expert in acute respiratory failure who attended University College Dublin, Ireland School of Medicine from 1969 to 1975. He is also a specialist in mechanical ventilation and neuromuscular control of respiration. Dr. Tobin completed his medical residency in Dublin and completed a training fellowship at King’s College Hospital, London, the University of Miami, and the University of Pittsburgh.

When asked about his medical opinion, Dr. Tobin spoke about Floyd’s pulseless electrical activity and said, “Mr. Floyd died from low oxygen, and this caused damage to the brain that we see, and also he caused a PEA arrhythmia because his heart stopped. ”

During the trial, Dr. Tobin said that the manner in which Floyd was handcuffed and the prone position of Derek Chauvin’s knee on his neck and back contributed to the shallow breathing. Not only that, he also added that the force of the agents crowding the asphalt street prevented him from being able to breathe completely.
“It’s the way the handcuffs are held, how they are pushed, where they are pushed, that totally interferes with the core characteristics of how we breathe,” he said. Outlining more details about Floyd’s medical condition, Tobin said that Chauvin’s knee on the left side of his chest could have limited the amount of air that can enter the left lung. Describing the scenario, he added that it was as if “a surgeon had gone in and removed the lung …”
