Who was Dr Jamie Butler ?
A GP who previously worked as a senior doctor for Manchester City plunged 300 feet to his death as he and his wife set out to revisit a mountain ridge where he proposed to her 27 years earlier.
Doting husband and father of twin boys, Dr Jamie Butler, 54, popped the question to his wife Margaret at Striding Edge in the Lake District in 1994.
Investigation
The couple, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, had returned to the Lakes last November to follow the same path and rekindle the moment.
An investigation heard that when the couple reached Striding Edge, Dr. Butler walked alone to find the exact spot where he proposed to her and a mist descended, drastically reducing visibility, before he fell from the mountain.
He sustained significant injuries, including a fractured skull, and mountain rescuers found his body below the ridge before he was pronounced dead.
The inquest said Dr Butler, who also previously worked as a team doctor for the Sale Sharks Premiership rugby team, was facing unspecified historical “accusations” and was suspended from his practice at the time of his death. .
But his doctor said he was certain there was “no suicidal intent” as Dr. Butler was “determined” to clear his name.
After investigation, a former colleague remembered him as a “wonderful guy who will be sorely missed by his friends and family.”
“In his last treatment before he died, he stopped me in the waiting room and asked me to accompany him to his car.
“The last thing he said to me was that he was very happy to see how Altius had come from nothing to what he is now and that he should be very proud of the whole team there.”
“A wonderful guy who I’m sure will be sorely missed by his family and friends.”
The Lake District was said to hold a special place in the couple’s hearts, the hearing in Cockermouth was told.
The investigation heard that the couple had gone for a walk on the afternoon of November 2, 2021.
Mrs. Butler said that when the couple arrived at Striding Edge, she was too tired and Dr. Butler walked on her own to find the exact spot where she asked him to marry her.
Statement
In a statement, Mrs. Butler described seeing her husband walk away from her in the fog.
After she was gone for a while, she yelled at him but got no response and called the police.
Doug Jones, chief physical therapist at Altuis Healthcare in Hale, worked with Dr. Butler at Sale Sharks when he was part of the physical therapy team.
Speaking to MailOnline, he said: “He was a really fantastic guy who didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone.” He was well liked by the staff and players at both Sale and Man City… you just couldn’t feel sympathy for him.
Mountain rescuers found her husband below the ridge dead from multiple injuries.
Coroner Kirsty Gomersal said at the hearing that she accepted the autopsy finding that Dr. Butler died of multiple injuries.
Death
Concluding that his death was an accident, she said “his doctor was certain there was no suicidal intent” as Dr. Butler was “determined to clear his name” of the allegations in his against.
Mrs Butler said: ‘Jamie was a loving husband with twin boys whom he adored.
‘He will be missed forever.
He died doing what he loved.
Dr. Butler studied medicine at the University of Liverpool and showed an early interest in neurology and surgery. During his postgraduate training, he trained in all surgical specialties.
He became a Registrar of Neurosurgery at Oxford before training as a GP with wide interests, especially in sports medicine. He once told an interviewer at TRB Chemedica: ‘I was a great cyclist and runner, always looking for ways to improve performance and speed recovery.’
Following stints at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and the Sale Sharks Rugby Club, Dr Butler became a doctor for Manchester City Football Club in 2007 and was promoted to Senior Medical Officer in 2009. In 2011, he was acquitted. of wrongdoing after defender Kolo Toure received a six-month suspension after testing positive for drugs.
Toure had taken his wife’s diet pills, and when he found out, he claimed he had shown the substance to Dr. Butler, who insisted he gave her the go-ahead to take the pills.
A Football Association report ruled against Toure, stating: “[Dr. Butler] never told him it was safe to use water tablets [and] would have unequivocally said they were prohibited and should not be used.”
