Who was Donna Mueller?
Donna Mueller, 75, and James Mueller, 76, were visiting DC from Janesville, Wisconsin, when lightning struck them near a tree along with two others.
We are saddened by the tragic loss of life following the lightning strike in Lafayette Park,” White House press secretary Karine Jeane-Pierre wrote in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones, and we pray for those who are still fighting for their lives.”
The other two have not been identified.
Fox News cameras may have captured the lightning strike that struck all four victims. A video posted shows lightning around the same time as the incident.
A CBS News reporter was on the North Lawn of the White House Thursday when lightning struck nearby. The reporter is seen jumping in fear as another person is heard saying, ‘That’s too close, we’re closing.’
Officers from the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Park Police went to help the victims immediately, according to VIto Maggiolo, a D.C. spokesman. Fire and EMS.
Maggiolo said the four people caught up in the incident were likely trying to seek shelter under the nearby tree as the storm passed just before 7 p.m.
The Fire and EMS spokesman pointed out that trees are not the ideal shelter during thunderstorms.
“Trees are not safe places,” said Maggiolo. “Anyone who goes to seek shelter under a tree, that’s a very dangerous place to be.”
