Dolal Idd was a Somali-American man who was mortally wounded by Minneapolis police after he initiated an exchange of gunfire with officers on the night of December 30, 2020, during a felony traffic stop in the US state of Minnesota. The incident took place outside a Holiday gas station at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and East 36th Street in the city’s Powderhorn Park neighborhood, one mile (1.6 km) from where George Floyd was killed by a police officer. Idd’s death was the first murder committed by a Minneapolis police officer since Floyd.
At the time of his death, Dolal Bayle Idd was a resident of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He was finishing a three-year probationary period related to a weapons conviction and was taking classes at Normandale Community College. His last known address was his parents’ home in Eden Prairie.
In 2019, Idd had been convicted of illegally possessing and shooting a weapon in Hennepin County. According to the charges, in 2018 Idd had fired a gun in the shower of his parents’ Eden Prairie home while two children slept nearby. Previously, Idd was not allowed to enter the house because it scared the small children who lived there, and it was believed that he had entered through the basement. Police arrested him a few hours later when he was responding to a suspicious vehicle in a Bloomington parking lot. Idd was found in possession of drug paraphernalia and a stolen handgun. Idd had a misdemeanor conviction for carrying a gun in public in 2019, a felony robbery conviction in 2018 and a drug crime conviction in 2017.
Idd’s death came as Minneapolis officials attempted to reform city police policies after Floyd’s death and tackle a wave of violent crime. Idd’s death was the 83rd homicide in the city in 2020, a figure that dwarfed the previous two years combined.

On the night of December 30, 2020, Minneapolis police pursued a vehicle containing Dolal Idd and a female passenger. Officers claimed they had “probable cause” in a weapons investigation and eventually surrounded Dolal’s vehicle in the parking lot of a Holiday gas station near Cedar Avenue and East 36th Street at approximately 6:15 p.m. In a chaotic scene captured on video, three police cars converged on Idd, who attempted to drive in reverse to escape before being blocked. The officers identified themselves as policemen and asked Idd to “stop the car” and “raise his hands.” Idd allegedly fired a handgun through his rolled-up window, shattering the glass outward with visible smoke. Then someone cursed and the officer approaching the vehicle ducked for cover. Two seconds later, the officers returned with more than a dozen shots.
Idd died at the scene. The woman who was in the car with him was unharmed. Minneapolis police officers reported the recovery of a weapon.
The sources identified the Minneapolis police officers who shot Idd as Darcy Klund, Paul Huynh and Jason Schmidt. They were members of a special Community Response Team that responds to problems like drugs and street crime. No officers were injured in the December 30 incident.

Minneapolis police have released body camera footage of a fatal shooting by officers, the first death by police in the American city since George Floyd, a black man, in May.
The victim, 23-year-old Dolal Idd, was suspected of a serious crime and was detained by police on Wednesday. It was also black.
Initial statements from witnesses and police say Idd fired first and was shot and killed when officers returned fire.
Minneapolis saw months of rioting after Floyd’s death in police custody.
The protests spread throughout the United States amid reports of police brutality.
Mr. Floyd died after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
Images of Wednesday’s fatal shooting, from the body camera of one of the officers involved, were released Thursday night.

A female passenger in the car with Idd was not injured, police said, nor were officers.
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said a weapon was found at the scene.

People including Mr Idd’s father Bayle Gelle gathered at the scene the following day, prompting fears of renewed protests.
“He was just sitting in the car, and bullets were shot at him, and no reason,” he said, quoted by CBS News.
“Why are we here?… Because of color. He is a black man. We want to know why my sweet son gets shot and killed. ”
City mayor Jacob Frey said he was committed to getting the facts and pursuing justice.
“We know a life has been cut short tonight and that trust between communities of color and law enforcement is fragile,” he said in a statement.
“Rebuilding that trust will depend on complete transparency.”
Mr Floyd’s death in May led to calls for reform or even abolition of the city’s police department, but those efforts have stalled.
The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office identified the deceased person as Dolal B. Idd, a 23-year-old Black man. An autopsy by the medical examiner revealed the cause of Idd’s death to be multiple gunshot wounds. The Minneapolis Police Department released a 27-second video from an officer’s body camera on December 31. A spokesperson for Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the city released the video footage to dispel rumors about the incident, and that the segment released had the clearest view of footage they had in possession. The state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is responsible for the investigation of Idd’s death. The bureau said additional footage would be released when the investigation is closed.
