Who is Diana Kirk ?

An elderly disabled woman had to be taken to hospital after a rat viciously attacked her in the face while she slept, her husband said.

Diana Kirk was left with shocking injuries after she was discovered covered in her own blood at 5:45am on Monday May 9th at her home on Ringwood Road in Bingham.

The 76-year-old woman cannot move because she has brain damage. Her husband John Kirk, 85, cares for her along with a care team that comes to her home to help her.

She sleeps downstairs in a hospital bed while Mr. Kirk sleeps upstairs.

She said that she woke up when she first heard a rat ‘scratching’ at her feet, saying that he couldn’t see her well given how dark it was, but that she was clearly a large rodent.

Then around 1:30 a.m. m., he noticed it again, before falling asleep and waking up normally just before 6 a.m. m.

When he went downstairs and checked on her wife in the living room, he saw her covered in blood and with small bite marks on her face.

He immediately called the ambulance, which arrived around 8:20 am.

The next morning, after a neighbor set up a trap in the house, Mr. Kirk says that the rat was caught and trapped in a cage.

When he moved it out into the yard, Kirk says the rat tried to bite him several times. He says a neighbor then killed the rat, shooting it four times with a BB gun before he finally died.

“Because of her condition, my wife is unable to move,” Mr. Kirk continued.

“I have since read that rats only look for small babies and people who are immobile in bed like my wife. She can’t feel pain, so she wouldn’t have known much about what happened.

‘I would like people to know what can happen and to be aware of it. I found out a couple of days after it happened that he was making a nest in the house.

Helen Speed is the Home Care Manager at East Notts and Melton Mowbray location, providing care for Mr and Mrs Kirk in their home.

She said: ‘A few weeks ago another of our caretakers was in Bingham and heard some screeching – there was a rat inside a client’s rubbish bin. I think that needs to be an ongoing issue and that I think people who live nearby need to be aware of, especially if they’re vulnerable.”
