Shooting
The shooting left five dead and 18 wounded.
Police also recovered two firearms in connection with the incident, including a long rifle they say Aldrich used in the shooting.
Shortly before midnight on Saturday night, the gunman opened fire immediately after entering a local club called Club Q, located in the 3400 block of N. Academy Blvd.
The incident reportedly only took place in a matter of minutes when police responded to the scene at 11:57 p.m.
Police took Lee into custody shortly after midnight.
Police have yet to confirm that this Aldrich is the same as the alleged nightclub shooter.
Victims
Following the tragic attack, two of the five victims have been identified.
A Club Qu worker revealed that bartenders Derrick Rump and Daniel Aston were killed in a moving tribute to their “boys”.
“Please take care of each other. I love you both so much,” the tribute read.
During a Sunday briefing on the shooting, Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez revealed that two people inside the club confronted and fought with the gunman.
“We owe them a great debt of gratitude,” Vasquez said, saying his actions prevented more violence.
He told 9 News that the entire incident probably took less than a minute.
The Good Samaritans reportedly grabbed the suspect’s gun and hit him with it, stopping the shooting, Mayor John Suthers told the local outlet.
The suspect was taken to UCHealth Memorial Hospital North for medical attention, though it was not immediately clear what injuries he sustained.
Vasquez said the suspect’s mother is not cooperating with police at this time.
Club Q has also praised the actions of customers who subdued the gunman.
“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community. Our prayers and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends,” the club wrote in a Facebook post.
“We appreciate the quick reactions of the heroic customers who subdued the gunman and put an end to this hate attack.”
During Sunday’s briefing, Vasquez described the nightclub as a “safe haven” for Colorado Spring’s LGBTQ+ community.
“Every citizen has the right to feel safe and protected in our city. To tour our beautiful city without fear of being harmed or mistreated,” he said.
Investigation
The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
The shooting took place on Transgender Remembrance Day when Americans remember those who have been killed as a result of transphobia.
It was first observed in 1999 and is held annually on November 20 to draw attention and awareness to the ongoing violence faced by transgender people.
In 2016, a targeted mass shooting in Orlando left 49 dead while attending the Pulse nightclub.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was a hate crime.
