Who is Derek Jeter ?

Derek Jeter will finally be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The legendary New York Yankees shortstop joined fellow Class of 2020 Ted Simmons and Larry Walker in Cooperstown on Wednesday to be enshrined alongside the late union leader Marvin Miller.

Jeter, 47, thanked everyone from his family, teammates and coaches during his 15-minute speech.

Last year’s ceremony was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. No one was selected from this year’s writers’ ballot and the Era of Hall of Fame committees postponed their scheduled elections until the next offseason due to the pandemic.

Jeter’s family was, of course, present, including parents Dorothy and Sanderson, sister Sharlee, and his wife Hannah, along with the couple’s two daughters, Story and Bella.

But the guest list hardly ended there.

In addition to the other Hall of Famers, the ceremony was also attended by NBA legends Patrick Ewing and Michael Jordan, the latter of whom played with Jeter in the Arizona Fall League during his brief sabbatical from basketball in 1994.

The rest of the crowd was also unmistakably in Jeter’s corner throughout the ceremony.

As the former Major League Baseball Players Association Donald Fehr spoke on behalf of the late Miller, thousands of striped spectators could hear groans.

Fehr begged ‘let me say a few more words’ within 20 minutes of his speech, but the response from the crowd was a distinctive ‘noooo’.

Adam Roorda reads the New York Post about Derek Jeter, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame

Jeter visited Cooperstown when he was a child nearly four decades ago and says he doesn’t remember much about the trip. He returns this week and will probably never forget a moment.

“As strange as it sounds or may sound, I’m trying not to think about it,” Jeter, 47, now owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins, said last week. ‘I just want to go there and experience it. I’m trying to keep it out of my mind because I want to get in there without preconceived notions of what can happen. I want to experience it and try to enjoy it. A lot of time has passed.’

ESPN will release Derek Jeter’s documentary series in 2022 titled …

No new players are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame for …

In 2007, the additions of Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn drew an estimated record crowd of 82,000 to the sprawling grass field at Clark Sports Center on the outskirts of this single-stoplight town in New York State. When the wildly popular Jeter was cast in January 2020, that record seemed to be in jeopardy because fans had been booking reservations far in advance.

Jeter leaps over the Baltimore Orioles ‘Gregg Zaun while making a late-inning double play off a Felix Pie grounder in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles in their baseball game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, July 22, 2009

With a midweek ceremony instead of the traditional Sunday afternoon, the school returned to session and with the threat of bad weather, the Hall of Fame did not offer an attendance prediction. The deaths of eight Hall of Famers over the past year and a half, including Hank Aaron and Yankees star Whitey Ford, and the persistent pandemic have limited the number of returning Hall of Famers to 31. Two years ago a record of 58 appeared.

Simmons, 72, a star catcher and first baseman in the 1970s and 1980s for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers, found a glimmer of light in the long wait.

“The wait has been good and bad, bad because you’ve had to wait another year for this to come to a head, but good because it has been extended for another year,” said Simmons, who grew up just outside of Detroit. “It’s been such a difficult time for everyone here in the last two years, across the country, in the workforce, in society at large with this pandemic. The fact that it is now going to happen brings us closer to a certain normality, which we all hope for. ”

The modest Walker, now 54, said the delay made his choice seem a bit surreal.

“ I got caught a lot of times when someone wants me to sign something and … I give it back to them and then they give it back to me because I forget to put HOF2020 there, ” said Walker, who will join Ferguson Jenkins as the only Canadian-born players. in the Hall of Fame. “So I guess the reality hasn’t been assimilated. I don’t necessarily consider myself a Hall of Famer at all.”

Jeter was the 57th player chosen by the American Baseball Writers Association on the first try. He was one vote away from becoming the second unanimous election, named in 396 of the 397 votes cast. His former Yankees teammate, reliever Mariano Rivera, remains the only one.

A key member of the five World Series champions, Jeter stayed right where he always wanted to be between 1995 and 2014: two decades in the Big Apple playing for a storied franchise.

“The most important thing during my career, what I wanted to be remembered, I wanted to be remembered as a Yankee. That was it, ‘he said. “ That was the only team I wanted to play for for as long as I can remember. As you start to play your career, you start to think about the legacy. It is much more than what you do in the field. It is the legacy that you leave off the field.

“ I never wanted my career to end and then say, ‘Well, I wish I had done a little more. Ultimately, you are judged, especially in New York, for winning. They remind you if you win.

Regarding those speeches, Simmons said that he dealt with his immediately and Walker said that he wrote his, that he believed it was definitive and that he continues to practice it.
