Who is Demetrius Harvard ?

A man who derailed a Manhattan subway train, injuring three passengers and causing hundreds of dollars in damage, was sentenced to prison Monday.

Demetrius Harvard, 32, was wearing a saliva-soaked hood when he was sentenced to between two and seven years behind bars in Manhattan Supreme Court. He pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and criminal mischief last month for the 2020 incident.

Court officials placed a spitting hood over Harvard’s head in court Monday after he collapsed and spat at court officials during a previous hearing.

Harvard dumped metal construction debris onto the tracks at West 14th Street and Eighth Avenue just as an uptown A train pulled into the station on the morning of September 20.

The train hit debris and derailed, injuring three passengers and “causing damage to multiple areas,” according to a criminal complaint.

Harvard reportedly smiled as he watched the train derail, the complaint says. Witnesses held him until the police arrived.

The third rail of the track, the station’s support columns and the front car of the A train were hit, according to the court document. The MTA estimated that the repairs would cost “significantly more than $1,500 to remedy” at the time.

The derailment was not the first time Harvard has damaged MTA property. Earlier the same month, he hit a city bus with a metal barricade in the street, breaking two windows, court records show.

Manhattan prosecutors, in that case, did not ask for bail and Harvard was granted supervised release after he was indicted on a misdemeanor charge of damages. He dumped debris onto the subway tracks about two weeks later.

Harvard’s mother was sitting in the courtroom during his sentencing. She was allowed to say goodbye before the court guards took him away.
