Demarcus Dunn Biography
Who was Demarcus Dunn ?
Baker Police Lt. Demarcus Dunn succumbed to the virus on Aug. 13, the day before the father of three walked down the aisle with his fiancee Francine James, The Advocate reported.
The couple were scheduled to tie the knot in July 2020, but the ceremony was postponed until Aug. 14 due to the pandemic, Baker Police Chief and Dunn’s cousin Carl Dunn told ABC News.
“She’s lost without him,” James’s boss said.
Dunn, an Air Force veteran who was named Baker’s Officer of the Year in 2016, tested positive in late July. He was not vaccinated even though the department required him to be vaccinated, Carl Dunn said.
“It was disturbing to me that he hadn’t gotten [the vaccine], and I wasn’t sure he wouldn’t have gotten it until it was all over,” the chief told ABC News.
Lieutenant Dunn initially had trouble breathing along with a headache and cough, but “always sounded optimistic,” even earlier in the day on Aug. 10, when he was put on a respirator, the chief said.

Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn said of Francine James
“I know he was a strong-willed and fighter,” Dunn continued. “I kept telling myself that he would make it, and I kept reassuring the family that I knew he would make it.”
But Lieutenant Dunn, who spent his spare time coaching youth soccer and basketball in the city of 12,000, never disconnected from the fan.
“He was competitive in everything he did, but all he wanted to do was give back and show people a better way,” Chief Dunn told The Advocate. “The difficulties he went through did not matter. You were going to see him smile. You were going to see him worried. ”
A memorial service was held for Lieutenant Dunn on Friday. He was buried in the Louisiana National Cemetery and masks were required, department officials said. He leaves behind three children, ages 1, 5 and 13.
Dunn’s cousin, Trina Dunn-Lindsey, said they both lost their parents at a young age, but that he later became something of a surrogate father to many young people throughout the community, touching countless lives.
“This one hurts a lot,” Dunn-Lindsey said.
More than 12,000 people in Louisiana have died from COVID-19, and those who are not fully vaccinated account for 91 percent of patients currently hospitalized with the virus, according to data from the state Department of Health.
Only 40 percent of Louisiana residents statewide are fully vaccinated, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. Only Arkansas, West Virginia, Idaho, Wyoming, Mississippi, and Alabama have the same or lower rates. Meanwhile, Vermont leads the nation with 67.5 percent, followed by Massachusetts with 65.4 percent.
