A North Carolina man was arrested in a “road rage” that killed a mother of six who was on an anniversary trip with her husband, authorities said Thursday.
The man, Dejywan R. Floyd, 29, was arrested at an apartment in Lumberton, North Carolina, early Thursday morning, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Mr. Floyd was charged with first degree murder in the death of Julie Eberly, 47, of Manheim, Pennsylvania, and discharging a weapon on an occupied property.
Mr. Floyd was booked into the Robeson County Detention Center without bond. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
Dejywan Floyd Arrested
According to the news release from the Sheriff’s Department, on Thursday, April 01, 2021, at approximately 12:38 a.m., Dejywan “was arrested in Parkview Apartments in Lumberton, NC.” Floyd is charged with First Degree Murder and Discharging a Weapon into an Occupied Property.
The sheriff said Floyd didn’t show any emotion when arrested.
The shooting took place before noon on March 25. Police said officers were dispatched to a report of a person shot on Interstate 95 in Lumberton, North Carolina, about 125 miles from Charlotte.
When officers, state police and sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found that Ms. Eberly had been shot through the passenger door of the GMC Yukon that her husband, Ryan Eberly, was driving, according to the Sheriff’s Office. .
Ms. Eberly was taken to a medical center in Lumberton, where she later died. Mr. Eberly was not injured.
The police investigation found that, unknowingly, a “road rage encounter” developed after the S.U.V. approached Mr. Floyd’s Chevrolet Malibu during a lane-to-lane merge, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Mr. Floyd then moved to the passenger side of the S.U.V., rolled down the window “and fired multiple shots at the passenger door.”
Witnesses told investigators that the driver pulled away and exited through exit 22, police said. The Eberlys stopped on the interstate and waited for medical assistance.
Using surveillance footage from dozens of businesses and local residents, investigators were able to trace Mr. Floyd’s path before and after the shooting, Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in the statement. His office said the investigation was continuing.
“Regardless of the circumstances, no one deserved to be killed while traveling the highways of our nation,” said Sheriff Wilkins.
The couple had been traveling to celebrate their seventh anniversary that week, according to an online obituary for Ms Eberly. They were on their way to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for a getaway, Sheriff Wilkins said.
