Incident details
Jarrell reportedly threw her children naked of hers down the fire escape in her Rockaway Parkway apartment around 11:00 a.m. On Saturday, before jumping to the ground and continuing to injure the newborn after landing on concrete in the yard, police and witnesses said.
Carl Chin, who lives in a row house near the backyard of the house, was quick to snatch the baby from his mother’s arms.
“He grabbed the two kids and hurt them even more,” Chin told The Post on Saturday.
“He had the baby under control and I had to take him out of his hands and hold him until the police and paramedics arrived,” he added. “When he tried to hurt her children and I snatched them out of his hands, he thanked me and told me to take care of her.”
Chin, 41, said his young mother told her she was “tired of being alone” after the shocking incident that left her sister-in-law “scared” and “traumatized.”
The four-week-old boy survived the two-story fall but remained in critical condition and the two-year-old suffered a non-fatal injury, according to a NYPD spokeswoman.
The mother and baby were taken to Brookdale Hospital, police said, while the baby was taken to Maimonides Hospital.
Neighbors were still shocked by Sunday’s news.
“He has been here for about three months. She was a good person, a mother, “said Herman Moultrie, 62, who lives in the building next to Jarrell.” She wasn’t on the street or anything like that. He didn’t know she had a problem like that. ”
“I think she was tired of being alone or maybe she was sexually abused.”
Agatha Altifois, 62, who lives in the same condo, added: “I’ve lived here for five years and I’ve never heard of anything like this.
“But it is very difficult to know where someone is, especially when she has two small children.”
