Who is Deashe Calhoun?

An 82-year-old janitor at a posh Upper West Side building was slashed across the head with a machete by a disturbed woman who broke free despite a host of previous arrests, police and sources said.

Hubert Meulens, 82, was left with a skull fracture and 11 stitches after 20-year-old Deashe Calhoun lunged at him in an unprovoked attack, cutting him across the face at Stone Street and Broadway, sources and police said. of MTA.

“Even with one hit, he could have died,” Meulens said in a telephone interview from his bed at Bellevue Hospital after his ordeal.

“I’m surprised he wasn’t in prison,” he said of his attacker. “She needs to be away from society for a long time.”

Arrested and Charged

Calhoun walked free after seven previous arrests involving a machete or other weapons, including a similar attack just days ago, the sources said. Calhoun was arrested and released after she followed a 31-year-old man and showed her machete but did not use it on Aug. 25, sources said.

The suspect is a known person with emotional disturbances and an affinity for weapons, according to the sources.

A maniac,” a police source said. “He is known to carry knives, sharp instruments, machetes. How is she hanging around?

Meulens’ son felt an attack was inevitable on his working father, an “easy target” amid worsening crime in the Big Apple.

“I tell him every night, be careful on the trains and on the street,” his 50-year-old son Peter Marcel told The Post. “There are a lot of zombies on the trains, which are very unpredictable and irrational. It is not being treated. Unfortunately, my fears have come true.”

Meulens, an immigrant from Curaçao and a former Pace University-educated accountant, insisted on continuing to work while he continues to care for his wife of 82 years, a retired nurse who suffers from cancer, diabetes and dementia, Marcel said.

“She still goes to work nights to pay her rent and take care of her family. That’s what she wants to do and at that age you can’t really say no to her,” Marcel said. “He takes care of his wife. He comes home and cooks for her every day. He takes his break and then rinses off and repeats.”

“This is what happens when you let people run through the streets with guns,” said a Manhattan police officer. “Eventually they will use them and attack an older innocent person.”

Meulens was downtown to renew his Senior MetroCard when he was attacked, he said.

Calhoun was arrested for assault, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and stalking, police said.

Meulens is now expected to remain hospitalized until at least Thursday, he said.

“I’m not mad,” the janitor said. “I would suggest that she needs to be examined by a doctor. He needs psychiatric help.”

On March 26, she was accused of threatening someone in Washington Square Park as she brandished a knife and said “I’m coming for you,” the sources said. Three months later, on June 26, she was accused of showing someone a switchblade knife at a Blink gym on Avenue A in Manhattan, the sources said.

The suspect herself was also charged with tampering with physical evidence on July 28, then re-arrested three days later on a weapons charge after she brandished her trusty machete at a victim on Fifth Avenue, according to sources.

Twice in August, she was seen with knives on Brooklyn trains: once on Aug. 7 when she was caught with two knives, and once again on Aug. 13 when she was seen with her machete in plain sight, the sources added.

Victim

Wednesday’s attack caused the victim’s son to rage over the crime and say that “New York City is not safe.”

Mayor Eric Adams called for change in the wake of the crime, saying public safety remains his administration’s top priority.

“We can no longer allow this catch, release and replay system to continue to hurt innocent New Yorkers,” Adams said in a statement. “This individual was caught with a dangerous weapon several times in the last six months, but he was still able to stab a man today. This madness must stop. It’s time to demand more from everyone involved in our criminal justice system and stand up for the innocent people of this city.”

Several Republicans criticized New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and Democrats after the attack, noting how state bail reform has made the charges Calhoun has faced bail ineligible.

“All New Yorkers should ask their Democratic state legislators and Kathy Hochul why they’re okay with machete-wielding psychopaths racking up recidivism records without a hint of consequence,” Councilman Joe Borelli told The Post. “We’re all paying the price for woke politicians to be able to say ‘we reduced the population of Rikers.’ Hooray for us!”

State Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy said “the crime crisis will continue to spiral out of control” unless voters demand change.

“Another Kathy Hochul bail law victim lies in a hospital bed from a violent and unprovoked assault,” he said in a statement. “New York City better wake up from its Democrat brain fog because the only way to stop this madness is to elect Lee Zeldin as Governor”
