Who is Dea-John Reid?
Dea-John Reid was chased and then attacked in the Kingstanding area of the city around 7.30pm on Monday. He died as a result of his injuries. Dea-John has chased a busy street in Kingstanding, north of Birmingham, before being stabbed. He died at the scene and a post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.
DCI Stuart Mobberley said: “This is an important step forward in our investigation, but we are still following all lines of investigation to find someone else involved in the tragic death of Dea-John.

Suspect
A man has been charged with the murder of 14-year-old Dea-John Reid, who was stabbed to death in Birmingham on Monday night. Michael Shields, 35, of Castle Bromwich, was due to appear in Birmingham magistrates court on Thursday morning.
A 38-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy remain in custody for questioning, while two 36-year-old and 33-year-old men and a 13-year-old boy have been released without further action. Six people were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder, and four men in their 30s and two boys, ages 13 and 14, remain in police custody.
Cause of death
Dea-John Reid as the teenager who was chased on College Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham, on Monday around 7.30pm before being stabbed and collapsed.
The force said it was investigating racist language directed at Dea-John and his friends prior to the incident and has referred the case to the Independent Office of Police Conduct for previous incidents involving the victim. In a tribute, Reid’s family described him as an “incredibly talented young man.”
“We would like to thank the emergency services for his diligence and support … and the public for his great love and support during this tragic and challenging time,” they said. “This loss affects not only us but everyone that Dea-John knew, we have lost a son, his siblings have lost a brother and others have lost a friend. We will all feel the passing of this incredibly talented young man. How many more mothers will have to mourn their children for this to end? ”
Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Stu Mobberley of the force’s Homicide Unit said investigations are ongoing.
“New information comes into the investigation all the time and is evaluated,” he said. As the investigation progressed, we now believe that there was an incident involving Dea-John and his friends shortly before the murder. That quickly escalated, resulting in Dea-John’s tragic death.
“During this precursor incident, racist language was directed at Dea-John and his friends; which is now being investigated. We are still asking that the witnesses, anyone who has seen or heard anything that might help our investigation, get in touch so that we can build a clear picture of what happened. “
