I am an Indiana Police Officer with the South Bend Police Department, currently assigned as an Investigator in the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, St. Joseph County, Indiana, and I am making this affidavit after making my research and review the work. from my fellow officers.

 

 

The facts that form the basis for the belief that there is probable cause to believe that DAZHON A HOWARD has committed the crime (s) of count 1: murder, a felony and increased use of firearms by the felony are the following:

On September 12, 2020 at approximately 2:46 p.m. Mishawaka Police were dispatched to University Park Mall, Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana for a shooting. When officers arrived, they finally encountered a man inside the mall. The man was pronounced dead and had apparent firearm trauma. The victim was identified as Delaney Crosby, 23.

Many video clips were obtained from social media sites and store surveillance systems. Some of these clips showed a single shooter, a younger black man dressed in an orange hoodie. Just before the shooting, the attacker and his company had had a verbal altercation with the victim and his company. The shooter was wearing a black backpack from which he pulled his pistol. The shooter concealed his drawing by crouching behind his friend in a black sweatshirt. The shooter came up behind his friend and pointed the gun only at the victim. The victim ducked and the shooter began firing, firing multiple shots at the victim and only the victim. The victim fell where he was and everyone else fled. The victim is not seen making any threatening movements in the seconds leading up to the shooting, and the accompanying man dressed in red is holding a shopping bag in one hand and holding his pants close to the crotch with the other.

Several spent shell casings were recovered near the victim. On the outskirts of the mall, the black backpack was recovered. Inside the backpack was a semi-automatic pistol. An orange hoodie was also recovered from the parking lot.

 

A witness at the mall identified a certain young woman, C.D., as one of the members of the shooter’s group. Police interviewed C.D. who explained that she had gone to the mall with her boyfriend and 2 small children, as well as the shooter, whom she identified as Dazhon HOWARD by name and photo. CD. He had known HOWARD for some time because he had grown up with his boyfriend. HOWARD was wearing a bright orange hoodie. CD. He explained that they went to the mall to change shoes and that while they were doing it they saw Crosby, who called his company with a derogatory name. Crosby then asked if they wanted to take him outside to him, “I had something for all of you.” The two parties continued arguing back and forth as they walked through the mall. CD. stated that Crosby never showed or reached for a weapon, but thought that perhaps Crosby’s friend was “grabbing” or grabbing his clothing as if there was a hidden weapon in it. CD. Crosby said flinched at his group as if to do something, and then Dazhon HOWARD drew his pistol and fired at Crosby, hitting him several times. HOWARD’S was the only weapon he saw during the entire episode. CD. He said everyone ran and got in the car. On the way home, he yelled at HOWARD and asked, “Why did you do that?”

Police interviewed D.P. who has been friends with Dazhon HOWARD for many years. D.P was at the mall with HOWARD and others. D.P. He also talks about Crosby saying that if the group wants out, he has something for them, and that the man in red with Crosby seems to be stuck. D.P. His back was to HOWARD when HOWARD drew his pistol and began firing. D.P. He said his reaction was one of surprise, wondering, “What’s going on?” D.P. He stated that he cannot be dragged into criminal behavior because his family needs him. He immediately stated that HOWARD’s family needs him too, “… but he did this nonsense, man

Dazhon Howard  arrest warant issued

At the time of this release, he has not been detained.

Police are asking for help locating Dazhon Howard. He is a black male, 5’8 “, approximately 160 pounds (see attached photo). If you have any information on his whereabouts, call the St. Joseph County Metropolitan Homicide Unit at 574-235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.

The sentence range for murder is 45 to 65 years. A Felony Firearm Sentence Enhancement can add an additional 5 to 20 years to the conviction of the underlying offense.

Please note that the charges brought against this defendant are mere accusations and that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Officials release suspect information, mugshot in deadly UP Mall shooting

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has released information on the suspect and a mugshot in a fatal shooting that occurred inside the UP Mall in Mishawaka.

They say Dazhon A. Howard is still at large. If you have information, call the police at 574-235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.

Today, the St. Joseph County Attorney’s Office indicted Dazhon A. Howard, 21, of South Bend, in connection with the Sept. 12, 2020, fatal shooting of Delaney Crosby at University Park Mall, Mishawaka. He is charged with murder and felony improvement of sentence by firearm. Probable cause was found and an arrest warrant was issued. He was ordered to be detained without bail. At the time of this release, he has not been detained. Police are asking for help locating Dazhon Howard. He is a black male, 5’8 “, approximately 160 pounds (see attached photo).
